  15th (Scottish) Division Research Website
The 15th (Scottish) Division served under the British Army in WWII in the Northwest European Theater from 14 June 1944 until the end of hostilities in Europe.
This site is dedicated to preserving the memory of one of the boldest fighting divisions to serve in the British Army in time of war.
From the Normandy breakout to the Rhine crossing, the 15th was in action on the front lines.

The attack was to be coordinated with the 15th Scottish Division's attack toward MEIJEL from the north.
This operation ceased as the division was relieved in the zone of the VIII Corps (British) by the 15th Scottish and 51st Highlander Divisions.

 Combat Mission British Uniforms
The division moved to France in the second week of June of 1940 - after the fall of Dunkirk - and was withdrawn again a week later.
In October 1944, the division was finally committed to action in the Scheldt fighting, and remained in Northwest Europe until after the cessation of hostilities in May 1945.
The Guards Armoured Division was formed in the United Kingdom in 1941, and after many reorganizations, moved to Northwest Europe on 28 Jun 1944, where it fought until the cessation of hostilities in May 1945.

In the division reserve was Combat Command Reserve under Colonel JOHN L. This Combat Command was composed of the 17th Tank Battalion (-A) and the 38th Armored Infantry Battalion (-C). The division's advance was slow in the face of determined resistance from dug-in positions and pill boxes.
The 15th Division (Sc) was to take over that sector and operate toward MEIJEL while the 7th Armored Division was to move south to the vicinity of WEERT to defend a narrowed sector and attack northeast to coordinate with the 15th Division's attack.
As the forces of the Division continued their advance to the south on the east side of the canal line, having effected the crossing of the canal, mounting numbers of prisoners were being taken.

 The Battle of La Coruna in The Peninsular war
The British Hussar regiments wore the traditional Hungarian Hussar uniform of shabrach, dolman and fur busby.
Napoleon was coming after him and it was imperative that the British army retreat with all speed to Corunna in the North West Galician corner of Spain for evacuation by the fleet.
A notorious incident took place at Bembibre where 200 British soldiers became so drunk in a cellar that they had to be left for the French (the figure is officially recorded in a return).

 A Brief History of The Liverpool Scottish
The Liverpool Scottish was formed as an infantry battalion in 1900 in response to the crisis of the Boer War.
Division with its motto 'They win or die who wear the rose of Lancaster', and a second battalion (2nd/10th) was formed in 1914 and served in France from 1917.
The Museum is organising the sponsoring and planting of 'Scottish Wood' at Altcar Range north of Liverpool and the dedication of this was to have taken place in May 2001.

Feuchy was captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the 9th April, 1917, lost at the end of March 1918, and retaken at the end of the following August.

The 15th division were through Loos by 08.00 and reached the Lens-La Bassee road by 9.15, but by now things had started to go awry, the division was starting to lose the direction in which it should be advancing.

A serious natural obstacle confronted the Highlanders in a deep fold of the ground known as Y Ravine, which ran down from the village to the German trenches, and the ground in general over which their advance was made was horrible with the dead and the litter of the struggle here in the previous July.
The 51st Division, which was in the XVII Corps under Sir Charles Fergusson, and part of Allenby's Third Army, was opposite Thélus and facing the outer spurs of Vimy Ridge, in front of which, to the Division's left, lay four Canadian divisions, while on its right was the 34th Division.
In the first phase of the battle of the 20th November the Division had severe losses in its assault upon the strongly organized village of Flesquières, the approach to which was a long slope swept by machine-gun fire, which rendered the cooperation of the tanks unsatisfactory.

There was an increaing division in Scotland during this period between the Gaelic Highlanders in rural areas and the increasinly Anglicized urban population.
Scottish boys the same styles as worn by English boys which meant as soon as they emerged from dresses, they were breeched in the English styles of the 18th century, the same styles as worn by their fathers.
Scottish boys were wearing the kilt in the early 19th Century, but I'm unsure as to how commonly.

After an exhausting day visiting the Division, the King, Bird and the General returned to the Officers' Mess, where the General, who was a teetotaller, began to talk of cups of tea.

 St Martin des Besaces
The advance south from Caumont was lead by 15th (Scottish) Division, supported by 4th Guards Tank Brigade, and elements of the 11th (Armoured) Division.
Hill 309 was captured by 7pm on the 30th July by the 4th Coldstream Guards under Major Sir W.Bartelott, who was given command of the Brigade as a result of his unit's epic battle here (and post he only held for less than two weeks until he was killed on 16th August).
