The regiment performs the light infantry role, mainly operating on foot, its main vehicle being the Land Rover.
It is currently based in Chepstow, Wales as part of 160 (Welsh) Brigade.
The winning company is given a special flag bearing the King's personal cypher, the Company Sergeant Major is presented with a special pace stick, and all members of the company are permitted to wear a special red badge on the arm of their uniform.

The bulk of the British troops is from 102 Logistics brigade, which has the task of moving an army thousands of miles across sea and desert, as well as keeping it armed and supplied.

A KFOR British soldier was seriously injured yesterday afternoon in Podujevo, in Multinational Brigade Centre, when his head was trapped in the turret mechanism of his armoured personnel carrier.
On the humanitarian front, the brigade also reported that the United Arab Emirates troops are continuing their program of home rebuilding, with 130 houses that have now been repaired and ready to live in.
The brigade is also actively involved in transport operations in support of governmental and non-governmental organisations in need of support for the urgent delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Main Brigade HQ in the chateau at Beny sur Mer was an obvious target for the enemy artillery and was finally forced to evacuate it on the 13th, after several direct hits had set the chateau on fire.
On the 16th 160 Brigade took over the area we had captured and began to mop up and extend it, while The Greys supported 1 HLI on a cross-country move to Martigny and beyond.
The Sharpshooters were supporting the Royal Netherlands Brigade and the right squadron of The Royals, The Greys supporting the rest of the front of the Royals, 4 RHA and the 6 guns of the Royal Netherlands Brigade supporting the whole front.

This was very symbolic because the term Irish brigade had been used since the early 1700's when the first Irish exiles when to France in 1689 and formed a brigade in the French army which was called the Irish brigade.
The brigade continued to exist for the rest of the war and was recruited up largely to strength over the winter 1863-1864 fought in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania.
It was not unlike the Irish brigade in France in the 1700's in which the regiments were almost proprietary of the regiment of Dillion.

The gallant stand which his bold Brigade made on the heights of Fredericksburg is well known.

Coming under heavy fire, the British and Irish, now numbering only 160 out of the original 600, had to establish defensive positions along the “sunken road” which is off the road between San Martin de la Vega and Morata de Tajuna.
This is the entrance to a building used by the British and Irish Battalion throughout the battle and referred to by many interviewed volunteers as the “Cookhouse”, it is now once again a restaurant and is located on the road between Morata de Tajuna and Chinchon.
It is moving to visit the memorial in the cemetery, and the presence of floral and written tributes in front of the wall plaque and memorial stone provides confirmation that the sacrifice of Christopher Caudwell and his many comrades has not been forgotten.

For the last few decades the PC ethos has meant that there was no social penalty for British Muslims (and others) if they loudly announced their disloyalty.
Meanwhile any member of an ethnic minority who said he was British and proud of it was mocked as a naive fool in the Guardian or Independent or scorned as a sellout in the ethnic press.
The thing that rankled most was that at the very same time there were severe social penalties for anyone who made the slightest suggestion that any British Muslims were less than whole-hearted in their patriotism.
