The division fought several rear-guard actions during the retreat through France and Belgium, and in early September 1944, the exhausted unit was pulled out of the line for rest and refit near the Dutch city of Arnhem.
The division, along with the majority of the SS Panzer units available, was to take part in Operation Frühlingserwachen (Spring Awakening), the offensive near Lake Balaton aimed at securing the Hungarian oilfields and relieving the forces trapped in Budapest by the Soviets.
Hohenstaufen was involved in the ferocious fighting to escape the Soviet encirclement, and on 6 April the tattered remnants of the division emerged from the trap.

The 23rd (Northumbrian) Division was a 2nd Line Territorial Army duplicate of the British 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division during the Second World War.
The 23rd Northumbrian Division was raised in October 1939, and was sent to France on 22nd April 1940 on Labour and training duties, without any of its artillery, signals, or administration units.
On its return to Britain, after Dunkirk, the 23rd Division was disbanded due to the heavy losses it had suffered.

A telegram from October 7, 1944 from the Befehlshaber noted that “combat-ready parts of Division Lombard, including the Muslims of the ‘Kama’ Division (2,600 men) deployed on the Theiss to protect the Batschka.” The unit of the Batschka Division deployed was the Kampfgruppe Syr, which according to the dispatch, included Bosnian Muslims.
Gustav Lombard, the last commander of the Kama Division, was a Soviet POW and was incarcerated in a Soviet prison from May, 1945 to October 10, 1955.

 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland
After it's formation in Germany, the division was attached to SS-Obergruppenführer Felix Steiner's III (Germanic) SS Panzer Corps and was moved to occupied Croatia for training and to complete it's formation.
On February 16th, the division was ordered on the offensive as a part of Operation Sonnenwende, the operation to destroy a Soviet salient and to relieve the troops besieged in the town of Arnswalde.
