  Fourth Battle at Cassino
The British 8th Army had three objectives--(1) To break through the enemy positions in the Liri Valley in the general direction of Highway no.6 and to reach the area east of Rome, (2) To pursue the enemy in the general direction of Terni-Perugia, and (3) To advance to Ancona and Florence.
The British XIII Corps' task is to form bridgeheads between the Cassino railway station and Santo Angelo and between Santo Angelo and the Liri and then to move toward the Via Casilina in the vicinity of Piedmonte.
The British 78th Division captures Piumarola and, to the north, the 4th Division reaches the Via Casilina, thus choking off a vital artery leading to the Cassino front.

The big danger is that the 5th Army may well strike NW towards Villers-Cotterets, in order to sever the German 3rd Army (containing the the strongest remaining part of the erstwhile Blucher forces) from 19th Army to the north in the Compiegne sector.
As it was, the German 3rd Army towards the end of June II was fatally unable to sustain a drive on Chalons and hold on to Chateau Thierry.

Montgomery remained in the British Army and in 1926 became an instructor at Camberley.

On 01 September 1957, the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Airborne Battle Group, 501st Infantry as an organic element of the 82nd Airborne Division, and activated at Ft. Bragg, NC (concurrently, organic elements constituted and activated at Ft. Bragg).
The 2nd Battalion, 501st, while attached to the 3rd Brigade, 101st, received a Presidential Unit Citation for heroic actions of all elements of that brigade, in the bloody fight at Hill #937, in the Ashau Valley.
As part of the post Vietnam reorganization, the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry was inactivated on 31 July 1972, and in the restructuring to the U.S. Army regimental system, the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry was inactivated at Ft. Campbell on 05 June 1984.

The British 8th Army was organized in the Middle East in 1941, from the British and Commonweath forces that were sent there in 1939-41.
By the time of Operation Crusader, in November, 1941, 8th Army consisted of the British XIII and XXX corps, with the following divisions under command: British 7th Armored, South African 1st Infantry, South African 2nd Infantry, British 4th Indian, New Zealand 2nd Infantry, plus elements of the British 1st Armored and 5th Indian divisions.
There were no US combat units attached to 8th Army, although various liasion and technical missions involving US soldiers were in Egypt at this time.

To bring the Continental Army up to strength, Congress ordered the states in January 1777 to fill their units "by drafts, from their militia, or in any other way." As Virginia was unable to meet her quota of 10,200 men with volunteers, a draft based on the existing militia lists had to be considered.
The Continental Army wanted long-term soldiers who served wherever needed, an unappealing prospect for Virginians at a time of heightened slave unrest and the threat of wholesale desertion of their fl property to the British.
