 Accrington Pals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the 31st Division, the Accrington Pals were initially deployed to Egypt in early 1916 to defend the Suez Canal from the threat of the Ottoman Empire.
On the first day on the Somme, 1 July 1916, the 31st Division was to attack the village of Serre and form a defensive flank for the rest of the British advance.
The 31st Division's attack on Serre was a complete failure though some of the Accrington Pals did make it as far as the village before being killed or captured.

 The Battle of the Somme - Cheetham
The British fired over one and a half millions shells from 1537 guns at the German lines, which should have destroyed the German dug-outs which were dug 9 metres deep into the ground, shred their barbed wire and kill most of the Germans.
In division 46 it was very muddy, some of the men had spent the night up to their waists in water.
September was one of the days of greatest progress for the allies and the British began the third phrase of the battle by advancing on a six mile front to a depth of 2000 to 3,000 yards.

The French 157th Division was relieved in the front line on July 14 and, on July 16, relieved the French 68th Division in the Verdun Sector.
The 161st Division announced in orders issued on the 28th that the mission of the IX Corps for the following day was to push energetically in the general direction of Vouziers, about 9 kilometers north of Monthois, in order to prevent the enemy from establishing himself upon his chosen line of resistance.
The remainder of the regiment was held in division reserve in the vicinity of Antioche Ferme.

During the remainder of 1942 and nearly all of 1943, the 31st Division trained and retrained its units as drafts of individual soldiers were pulled from it, sent to other formations, officer candidate school, the Army Air Corps, or to other army specialty schools.
Despite the fact that, at any given time, a large percentage of the men in the Division were raw recruits sent to it for training, the Division continually achieved the highest possible efficiency and readiness ratings from Army inspectors.
The 31st Division of 1944 was not quite the same as the 31st Division of 1940.

The frontage alloted to the 51st Division on the Somme Sector was sixteen miles in extent, an excessive amount, but probably not much greater than that which many French divisions were holding at the time owing to their depleted resources.
On 4th June the 51st Division Commander was ordered to carry out an attack on the Abbeville bridgehead, for which operation the newly arrived French 31st Division was placed under his orders, as well as 160 French tanks and a considerable reinforcement of French artillery.
The 51st Division was by this time in an exhausted condition, after 12 days of continual movement and battle, and was holding too wide a front to be able to resist effectively.

It was fully reconstituted on 21 June 1918 by the addition of units from the 74th Division, and redesignated 94th (Yeomanry) Brigade.
