  British 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division
This military division was formed on April 1, 1908 as the West Riding Division in the Territorial Force of the British Army.
The division was disbanded (in Germany) in 1946, but reformed in the Territorial Army (in 1947), having been renamed the 49th (West Riding) Armoured Division.
In 1956, it was renamed the 49th (West Riding and Midland) Infantry Division, its base moved to Leeds, and the 8th Armoured Brigade was removed from its order of battle.

The attack was launched west of Caen and was intended to cross the River Odon and River Orne southwest of the city, outflanking and surrounding its defenders.
A preliminary attack was launched by units of British XXX Corps to secure ground on the flank of the intended advance.
On June 25, the British 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division gained some ground but the weather was still foul and the attackers were hampered by muddy ground and lack of air support.

The 46th Division commenced to move to Egypt in January, 1916, and after Divisional Headquarters and two Infantry Brigades had arrived there the move was cancelled and the whole Division was in France again by the middle of February, 1916.
The 50th Division was reduced to cadre in June, 1918, and was reconstituted in July, 1918, with eight battalions from Salonika and two from another division in France.

Boezinge is a village in the province of West Flanders, north of Ieper on the Diksmuidseweg road (N369).
The burials were made without definite plan, and some of the Divisions which occupied this sector may be traced in almost every part of the cemetery; but the 49th (West Riding) Division buried their dead of 1915 in Plot I, and the 38th (Welsh) Division in the autumn of 1916 used Plot III.
The 49th Division Memorial is immediately behind the cemetery, on the canal bank.

Within 7 months of its formation the division was reduced from one of the most powerful divisions fielded during the war to a shattered, combat-ineffective unit with only 20 remaining tanks.
As the remainder of the division sped east it enjoyed some minor successes, including the capture of a large American convoy, but it was brought to a halt by fierce resistance near St. Hubert, and was soon drawn into heavy fighting south of Bastogne.
Engaged in a fighting retreat across northwestern Germany, the division was trapped in the Ruhr Pocket and the remnants of the once powerful division were taken prisoner by the Americans, in April, when the pocket surrendered.
