 CIAOPS World Guides - WWI Australian Battlefields
The Australian 5th Division objectives were the Peronne Bridges and Peronne, while the Australian 2nd Divisions was the bridgehead at Halle then Mont St Quentin and finally the Australian 3rd Division was to capture the high ground north east of Clery, then Bouchavesnes spur.
Australian troops were relieved by troops from the British 8th Division as previously arranged, from Villers-Bretonneux to the flank of the French at Hangard in the south.
The 9th Brigade of the Australian 3rd Division and the British 18th Division, which were holding the northern sector, are eventually driven back to the outskirts of Villers-Bretonneux.

The first clash between British and Italian forces took place in the Western Desert in the early hours of June 11, before the Italian troops concerned had been told of the declaration of war.
At the beginning of May 1942, the British war cabinet was pressing for an early offensive in the Western Desert, and General Auchinleck made the necessary plans.
In Libya the Italian garrison was sandwiched between strong French forces in French North Africa and considerable British forces in Egypt; and Italy's other colonies were surrounded by potential enemies on all sides, although the forces arrayed against her were not very formidable in the early stages of the war.

 BATTLE OF HURTGEN FOREST
North and south of Grosshau were the I and III Battalions of the 1055 Regiment of the 89th Division and the II Battalion of the 1058 Regiment, 344th Volksgrenadier Division, was positioned in the center.
Ernest Hemingway compared the Hurtgen forest to the British Offensive in Paschendale during World War I. Many of the opposing German generals also compared the battle to those of 1917-18 and von Gersdorf said it was more horrendous than any he experienced on the Russian Front.
The 5th Armor commander wanted to continue because "it will be better to attack tomorrow than to sit still and take losses." Although not recorded, the 4th Division commander, General Barton, apparently agreed to attempt to get the corps commander to delay the attack.

The Division was one of the first to land in France, and as part of II Corps, took the brunt of the early fighting at Mons and Le Cateau.
This Brigade was temporarily under the command of 28th Division between 23 February and 7 April 1915, when it was replaced by 84th Brigade from that Division.
The Division remained on the Western Front throughout the war, taking part in most of the major actions, except for some months in late 1917-early 1918 when it reinforced the Italian front.

The 29th and 22nd Brigades conducted another amphibious landing at Majunga on 10 September 1942, with the latter taking the lead in advancing toward Tananarive and then Ambalavao before the island finally surrendered on 6 November 1942.
On 5 May 1942 British Force 121 conducted Operation Ironclad, an amphibious invasion of the Vichy French colony of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.
