It was "British" in name, and was always commanded by a British general, although many of its component units were from British Commonwealth countries, including Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Rhodesia.
British units included the 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats) and the 51st Highland Division.
The Eighth Army was formed from the Western Desert Force in September 1941 and put under the command of Lt-Gen Sir Alan Cunningham.

When did the 8th Army go to North Africa, what route did the follow, where did they arrive, and what U.S. units were attached?
This seems to have been skipped over by the book, but it seems to have been equally important to the campaign in North Africa.

My Dad did not leave the U.S. until the end of 1942, when he shipped out of San Francisco, traveled through Australia, New Zealand, and into Egypt, which would have probably been the beginning of 1943.
I don't know the technical terminology for it, but somehow, he became attached to the 8th army at that time, and then proceeded across North Africa, and then into the invasion of Sicilay and Italy.
I have no idea what U.S. Army unit he was with.
