Actors' Equity Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Actors' Equity Association, commonly referred to as Actors' Equity, is an American labor union formed in New York City in 1913 by 112 actors working in the professional theatre.
During McCarthyism of the late 1940s and 1950s when actors and other members of the film industry were being fllisted, the Actors' Equity Association refused to bend to the will of the industry bosses and never banned any of its members.
The association's national headquarters are at 165 West 46th Street in New York City with regional offices in Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California plus a satellite office in San Francisco and in Orlando, Florida.

Equity comes into play typically when none of the parties to the dispute has done anything against the law, but their rights or claims are in conflict.
Thus, it is to be contrasted with "law," which is the legal principles from the common law, the laws enacted by governments, and the "case law" (the principles set forth in courts' opinions deciding cases).
Indeed, one of the historic criticisms of equity as it developed was that it had no fixed rules of its own and each Lord Chancellor (who traditionally administered the courts of equity on behalf of the King) gave judgment according to his own conscience.

Equity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Equity is "fairness" or "justness" and, specifically, is the name given to the whole area of the law that deals with disputes between persons when neither of them has done anything against the law, but there is a conflict between their rights or claims.
It is important to state that in the United States where trial by jury is guaranteed it is not guaranteed in court of equity as equity can only be dispensed by a judge as it is a matter of law and not subject to the intervention of the jury as trier of fact.
Whereas the laws a court of law enforced were often written down by whoever made the laws, the principles a court of equity applied were not, so a list of the principles evolved as the Maxims of equity.

 Julie Odegard, "Actors Equity Association"
Looking at the Actor's Equity from its beginnings in the late 1800's there are many signs of a union that has raised its members from being on the lowest rungs of humanity to theatre employees who are occasionally considered to be heroes in the eyes of the world.
Actors Equity is a strong union today partly because of where it began almost a hundred years ago.
The actor could be fired without any justification, as long as the manager found his or her work to be "unsatisfactory." And to make matters worse, this usually happened after a performer had just come off stage from finishing a performance.

The problem has arisen because two actors took their case to the commissioners, with the backing of Equity, and won it; namely, that they ought to be considered as self-employed because of the tax advantages.
As I said, the situation has been brought about as a result of two actors taking their case to the commissioners, when they were considered to be pay-as-you-earn employees and therefore eligible for national insurance class 1 contributions and eligible for unemployment benefit.
Will the Minister accept that there is no reason why such actors should not be allowed to continue to pay class 1 contributions?--otherwise, they have to be supported through means-tested benefits and the saving to the taxpayer cannot be all that much.
