BAR began by acquiring Tyrrell, and by using Supertec engines, but eventually partnered with Honda in the next six years.
Despite Villeneuve's lack of performance, BAR as a whole was on the upswing, with Jenson Button leading a Grand Prix for the first time (albeit briefly) at the 2003 United States Grand Prix.
BAR are currently testing a modified BAR-Honda 007 car which they will use for an attempt at the land speed record for a Formula One car meeting FIA regulations.

British American Tobacco Plc (LSE: BATS) is the second largest cigarette company in the world.
Established in 1902, when the United Kingdom's Imperial Tobacco Company and the American Tobacco Company of the USA agreed to form a joint venture, the British-American Tobacco Company Ltd. The parent companies agreed not to trade in each other's domestic territory and to assign trademarks, export businesses and overseas subsidiaries to the joint venture.
The British American Tobacco business thus began life in countries as diverse as Canada, China, Germany, South Africa and Australia, but not in the United Kingdom or USA.

British American Racing was established in 1997 with ambitious plans to build a competitive Formula 1 team.
BAR had promised works engines but in June announced that it had reached agreement to run Supertec Sport V10s - rebadged versions of the Mecachrome V10 which were themselves rebadged Renaults from the 1997 season.
BAR's first season in 1999 was a complete disaster but the team managed to secure a factory Honda engine supply for 2000 and things improved with fifth place in the Constructors' Championship, despite political in-fighting within the team.

Reliability seemed to be the major course for concern during the 99 season, with several strong performances in qualifying and the early race (San Marino and Spain) being ruined by failures on the cars.
Things were not helped in the teams second race, when Ricardo Zonta crashed heavily in practice and did not race for several weekends.
And from what we've seen during BAR's testing at Kyalami, S. Africa, the new BAR seems to be a much better car than previously, with Ricardo Zonta posting a couple of flying laps ahead of Williams.

Reynard Racing were on board to supply proven chassis expertise, and former F1 and PPG Champcar World Champion Villeneuve would be the number one driver and a shareholder in the team.
For a demoralising 11 consecutive races Villeneuve failed to even make the finish, and when reliability did improve later in the year, the car was rarely quick enough to trouble even the mid-field runners.
