By the turn of the century shorthair domestic cats in Britain had declined in status from something of the cat's meow to something that the cat fancy had dragged in and then abandoned.
Despite the importation of a number of shorthair cats in the early part of this century, American cat fanciers had trouble enough gaining the proper respect for the domestic shorthair without bothering to try to establish an imported shorthair in the bargain.

Persian Cat   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Longhaired cats, including the ancestors of the modern Persian and Angora breeds, were first seen in Europe in the mid- to late 1500s, introduced by Roman and Phoenician caravans from Persia (now Iran) and Turkey, according to documents of the era.
By the time of Weir’s cat show in 1871, distinct differences between the Persian and the Angora could be seen, the former being stockier with small, rounded ears, and the latter being slender and tall-eared.
In the early 1900s the British Governing Council of the Cat Fancy decided that the Persian, as well as the Angora and Russian Longhairs, should be known simply as Longhairs, a policy that continues today.

Turkish Van, Angora, Vankedisi (Van Kedi) Cats - FAQ
The Turkish Angora was probably also related at some point in its ancestry, although from a breeding point of view there is no permissible out-crossing between the Turkish Angoras and the Turkish Van/Vankedisi.
Many cats have some degree of white on them, but in the case of the Turkish Van this has been taken to the extreme such that the white covers nearly all of their body.
The highest risk is for the blue-eyed white cats, since the blue eye colour is caused by a lack of pigment in the eye in the same way as for white hair, and this acts as a measure of how much the pigment has been inhibited by the white gene.
