Gough’s Anecdotes of British Topography was continued in the ten volumes of John Nichols’s Bibliotheca Topographica (1780–1800), whose most important work was The History and Antiquities of the Town and County of Leicester, published from 1795 to 1815.
George Thomas Clark, a founder of the Archaeological association (now the Royal Archaeological institute), propounded, in his Mediaeval Military Architecture in England (1884), the theory that the castle of Norman times was identical with the burh of the Old English Chronicle; but this theory has been, practically, overthrown by later authorities.
The Kilkenny Archaeological society, founded in 1849, became, in 1869, the “Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland,” and, in 1890, the “Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.”

British School of Archaeology in Iraq, (speaking on behalf of Prof Elizabeth Stone, who was then back in Iraq but had reported on an earlier trip to threatened sites outside Baghdad), was able to give an impression of what was happening in the countryside.

Despite the prominent part played by the British aristocracy it would seem that the Romanization of the native religion was not as far reaching as it might appear.

The British Archaeological Association was founded in 1843 to promote the study of archaeology, art and architecture and the preservation of our national antiquities.
The Association holds an annual conference at a centre of established importance in the medieval period, usually in the British Isles and occasionally in mainland Europe, collating the results of recent research on major cathedrals, minsters and abbeys and including visits to places of relevant interest.
The Association’s 2007 Conference will be concerned with the medieval art, architecture and archaeology of Coventry, one of the wealthiest English cities of the later Middle Ages.

 Robert Henry Forster: The Archaeologist
British Archaeological Association in 1905 and a vice-president in 1911.
Forster was a competent photographer, a task with which he helped J.P. Gibson at Corbridge until the latter's death in 1912.
In his obituary of Forster in the 1923 volume of the Journal of the British Archaeological Association, W.H. Knowles noted that he was highly thought of by the labourers who worked on the Corstopitum excavations.

In 1970 Dr. Fergusson was awarded the Reginald Taylor Prize and Medal by the British Archaeological Association for a publication on Roche Abbey and in 1986 the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award of the College Art Association of America for his Architecture of Solitude: Cistercian Abbeys in Twelfth Century England (Princeton University Press, 1984).
He is co-author of Rievaulx Abbey: Community, Architecture, Memory, which was published by Yale University Press in the spring of 2000 and which was awarded the Alice Davis Hitchcock prize by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain in 2001, and the Haskins Medal of the Medieval Academy of America in 2004.
He is also the author of articles and reviews which have appeared in the British Archaeological Journal, Art Bulletin, Antiquaries Journal, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Gesta, and Speculum.
