  British 11th Army Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British 11th Army Group was the main British Army force in Southeast Asia.
Its headquarters was situated in New Dehli, eventually moving to Ceylon.
During the advance to be made in Northern combat area from Ledo to Myitkyina to cover the building of the Ledo Road, it was essential that this attack was co-ordinated with the attacks further south to prevent the Japanese concentrating large numbers of reserves for a counter attack on any one front.

British casualties in all the campaigns were beginning to take their toll.
In 1811, the British Army only recruited 26,000 men to replaced the 23,000 casualties they had the previous year, plus as replacements for ALL of the regiments on active duty, not just those serving in Spain and Portugal.
Although British casualties were not catastrophic, combined with the numerous global commitments and poorly planned and executed expeditions, the pool of available manpower was stretched to the limits.

 A Historical Account of the Ceylon Defence Force
The unit was officially attached to the Australia New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) and was in 1915 dispatched to Anzac Cove (‘Z’ Beach) on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
Later it was referred to as the Ceylon Mounted Infantry and in 1906 the Ceylon Mounted Rifles.
On disbandment its soldiery coalesced with the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps.

British casualties were estimated at nearly 200 troops, about the same number of sailors, and almost 50 marines; while French casualties were estimated at nearly 200 French troops, a couple Dutch troops, but more than 50 French marines--a disproportionately large amount for their numbers present.
The general's disappointment was palpable, as the chance at a shot of breaking the Franco-Dutch army in India in a pitched battle, with his field army and the large garrison combined, was dashed by the Navy removing the critical carrot dangling just in front of the enemy's eyes.

British involvement in India started with the East India Company, a chartered company of London merchants which gradually transformed trading privileges in Asia into a territorial empire centred on India.
The recapture of Delhi in September 1857 by the loyalist Sikhs and British reinforcements broke the back of the mutiny, and the rebels were beaten in 1858.
This role was transferred to British India in 1910, and to the newly independent Indian government in 1947.

In 1922, the CDF was once again honoured by the presentation of the King's and Regimental colours to the Ceylon Light Infantry.
During the 1914-18 war, many volunteers from the Defence Force found their way to England and joined the British Army, and many of them laid down their lives.
When the War ended, the task of returning the enormously swollen wartime CDF to its normal proportions began and by 1948 came independence and in 1949, the Army Act was passed by Parliament raising the Ceylon Army, composed of Regular and Volunteer Forces.

When both countries appealed for assistance from Great Britain, Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh the Secretary of State for War, saw an opportunity to allow the British Army to finally return to the continent and engage the French.
Numbers shown are rank and file, add the usual 1/8 for officers, sergeants, etc. I have not included either the Staff Corps or the Waggon Train in the Order of Battle, detachments of which served with the different forces.
