British Asian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term British Asian is used to denote a person of South Asian ancestry or origin, who was born in or was an immigrant to the United Kingdom, former heartland of the British Empire.
British Indians tend to originate mainly from two Indian States, Sikhs are largely from the Punjab region whilst Hindus tend to originate from the Gujarat, Punjab and West Bengal regions.
The first British Asian to gain wide popularity in the UK for being a mainstream celebrity in their own right and worldwide fame was the late Freddie Mercury, who led the rock band Queen.

 screenonline: Asian-British Cinema
The latter became one of the most popular British films ever and was a far cry from the colonially-obsessed images of Asians depicted in mainstream British cinema and television in the 1980s and earlier.
British Asian filmmaking has its roots in the 'Black' politics of the 1960s and '70s, as two distinct communities, Asians and African-Caribbeans, were melded together through their common experiences as racial minorities within the UK, often living under the threat of poverty and social exclusion.
British notions of class and regionality are also played out, particularly a preoccupation with the post-industrial 'north' and all its incumbent stereotypes.

 FT.com / Arts & Weekend - What’s right with Asian boys
This was ironic given the prejudices Asian families have typically had against fl communities and so, finally, I wanted to know why Asian kids were becoming alien to their own parents and adopting cultural identities that had as much to do with US hip-hop as they did with Bollywood.
If Asian “rudeboys” were thereby overshooting their masculinity and looking for cultural props with which to do so, no wonder they’d also reached out to gangsta rap music, successfully blending the elements of machismo, misogyny and homophobia in their parent’s culture with that inherent in hip-hop.
Just as British Asian boys have fused the misogyny of their parents’ culture with that of hip-hop culture and thereby reinforced both, so too there is a fusion of the materialism inherent in Indian culture and urban youth culture.

Annals of General Psychiatry | Full text | Self-harm in British South Asian women: psychosocial correlates and ...
The high rates of self-harm displayed by South Asian women is not a trend that is displayed by South Asian adolescents; in a study of South Asian female adolescents Bhugra et al [21] reported that rates of attempted suicide among teenagers were no different from their white counterparts.
In the South Asian context a recurrent theme within the qualitative studies is that the survivors of suicide attempts do not feel "heard" or understood either by their families or by mental health workers [30].
South Asians of both sexes were more likely to be discharged from emergency department without referral to other services, and be referred to their GP (either by letter or told to see), and they were less likely than Whites to be referred to specialist medical, surgical or psychiatric services.
