The submarines used for these scientific expeditions are specially suited for Arctic missions, and provided a rare opportunity for scientists to explore and map the Arctic Ocean floor, measure ice thickness, and collect water samples.

The B and C Classes were almost identical, being larger versions of the A Class, with petrol engines for surface propulsion and batteries for propulsion when submerged.
The first submarine to carry a boat appears to have been C1, which had a 10t berthon boat - a practice that was adopted for the remainder of the class.

British B class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The B class was a class of eleven submarines of the Royal Navy, built by Vickers and launched in 1904–1906.
The B class was similar in design to the A class, intended for coastal patrol work.
The design was intended to overcome the limitations of speed, endurance and seakeeping that affected the boats of the A class, and the boats were substantially longer and heavier.

However, erection of the launching ramp and preparation of the missile kept the submarine on the surface for five minutes; therefore, a hand-off control system was developed, whereby another submarine, 80 miles downrange, could take over for the last 55 miles of missile flight.

British doctrine held that submarines were limited to harbor operations; of course, but the people who wrote the doctrine had not been paying attention.
It was an acknowledgment that submarines would spend most of their lives on the surface and needed sea-keeping qualities not found in a streamlined "underwater" hull.
A month after that, U-18 penetrated the British fleet anchorage at Scapa Flow; although she did no direct damage and was captured, the effect upon the British Navy was electric: this one small boat forced the most powerful battle fleet in the world to shift to a base on the other side of Scotland.

Submarine: A Guided Tour of a Nuclear Warship, first published in 1993 but recently updated, is the lead book in a seven-volume non-fiction series which examines many of the weapons systems and/or units that appear in Tom Clancy's fiction.
Written with the assistance of defense analyst John D. Gresham, Submarine is an interesting look at one of the most fascinating yet least seen warships in the United States Navy, the Improved Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine.
This book was an excellent introduction to a range of topics: the role of submarines in the Navy, the various types of submarines out there, a little bit about the weapons systems and sonar equipment, and most importantly for me, a glimpse of life aboard a submarine.

 Captain Class Frigate - Welcome
Those that were built were distributed between six classes mainly distinguished by their power units and various armaments, these were Evarts, Buckley, Cannon, Edsall, Rudderow and John C. Butler, but here we are only concerned with the Evarts and Buckley classes as these were the only types used by the British Navy.
Although these vessels were to be produced mainly for anti submarine warfare the US Navy designated them as Destroyer Escorts and in addition to their Anti-Submarine weapons they were fitted with torpedo tubes on the superstructure midships, thus sticking to the Destroyer mentality.
The British on the other hand viewed these ships as unequivocally anti submarine units, so the use of torpedo tubes did not arise, and as they were of a smaller size than a Destroyer they designated them as Frigates.

 Sub Chasers (SC)
Although not aware of the full extent of U-boat successes until the spring of 1917, the United States knew from British experiences that, in addition to destroyers, many small vessels were required to locate, keep down, and sink enemy submarines.
Although the sinking of only one submarine was verified, they were effective in helping to curb the U-boat menace along the east coast and in the Caribbean.
The submarine of this period was capable of only limited submerged cruising at low speed, and the extensive patrolling by SC's and other ships and aircraft forced U-boats to spend much more of their patrol time beneath the surface, thus exhausting their batteries and reducing their effectiveness.

Submarine AE2, Harry Stoker Royal Australian Navy Gun Plot
After the formation of the Royal Australian Navy, initial plans for Australian submarines were for three British "C" Class boats but only two of the improved "E" Class were authorised.
By 1914 he was an experienced submariner and was chosen to command AE2, one of the two new submarines built at Barrow-in-Furness for the new Royal Australian Navy.
Despite the fact that the submarines of this era had never managed to sail more than 200 miles without breaking down, the intrepid Stoker and his mixed crew of Australian and English ratings, in company with the other Australian submarine, AE1, set sail for Australia on 2 March 1914.

While technologically advanced at the time, the Dreadnaught-class lacked in sublight and hyperspace speeds (a Class 4 rating), suffered computer failures, and could not compete with comparable designs in terms of firepower and shielding.
The Dreadnaught-class might be named after the British pre-WWI battleship HMS Dreadnought, which was the first true battleship to have a uniform main battery, rather than having a secondary battery of similar sized guns.
In its day, it sparked quite a revolution in terms of battleship-design and all subsequent battleships would be called "dreadnoughts" as they followed her "all-big gun" design.
