A division of BC Electric, the BCER operated public transportation in southwestern British Columbia from its establishment in the mid-1890s, operating streetcar systems in Vancouver, Victoria, New Westminster, and North Vancouver.
BCER interurban trams ran along 3 lines between Vancouver and New Westminster, as well as between Vancouver and Richmond, New Westminster and Chilliwack, and Victoria and North Saanich.
In 1989, BC Hydro sold the railway to a new shortline operator and the railway is now known as the Southern Railway of British Columbia and is exclusively a freight railway.

In 1958, British Columbia Premier W.A.C. Bennett boasted that he would extend the railway to the Yukon and Alaska, and further extension of the railway was undertaken in the 1960s.
In 1973, the British Columbia government acquired and restored an ex-Canadian Pacific Railway 4-6-4 steam locomotive of the type known as "Royal Hudsons", a name that King George VI permitted the class to be called after the Canadian Pacific Railway used one on the royal train in 1939.
Looking to retire BC Rail's debt, on May 13, 2003, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell reneged on promises to the contrary and announced that the government would privatise BC Rail (by means of a 999 year lease), while retaining ownership of the right-of-way.

BCER 503 is an Electric Freight Motor of the British Columbia Electric Railway Company.
It was built in 1899 by the shops of the BCER Co, rebuilt a few times, and in 1922 repainted in the then new BCER colors of red and cream.
The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society will be releasing the entire MSTS British Columbia Electric Railway, Fraser Valley Route as a CDR program package, in the late Summer of 2004 by "donation".

After two days of preparing the car to make the 1200 mile trip north, two trucks hired to make the move came to the museum's site; however, before their appearance 1225 was moved from the car barn to the loading site under its own power.
Along with the police was a representative from Southern Railway of BC (SRY), making sure all federal requirements were met as the large load had to cross and stop on SRY tracks.
BCER 1225 being unloaded from the truck, soon to be reunited with its own trucks.

This is one of the first 3 diesel locomotives owned by the British Columbia Electric Railway.
It served the BCER until it was sold to Eurocan Pulp in Kitimat BC where it and a sister 70 Tonner switched cars in the pulpmill.
Donated to the West Coast Railway Association, the locomotive was shipped on a flatcar to Squamish in late 1996.

The New Westminster Station at the foot of 8th Street and Columbia Avenue was a shared facility.
Both the BC Electric Railway and the Pacific Stage lines used this station.
When passenger service ended on the railway in 1950 the facility was sold and by 1954 was redeveloped as the Wosk building.

The negligence of such detail is unfortunate, not only because the lake was such a major feature of the Lower Fraser Valley, but because it figures in her history of the British Columbia Electric Railway.
Although the B.C.E.R. company wanted to drain the lake as part of its plan to push the rail through to Chilliwack, the plan was abandoned due to expense of the proposal.
Nevertheless, the railway, built on the south shore of the lake, was successfully completed in 1910, and is currently utilized by B.C. Hydro service trains.
