Crown dependencies are possessions of The Crown in Right of the United Kingdom, as opposed to overseas territories or colonies of the United Kingdom.
However, as they are possessions of the British Crown they are not sovereign nations in their own right, and the power to pass legislation affecting the islands rests ultimately with the British Parliament.
In the Isle of Man the British monarch is Lord of Mann, a title variously held by Norse, Scots and English kings and nobles (the English nobles in feudality to the English Crown) until it was revested into the British Crown in 1765.

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Isle of Man
The Isle of Man (Ellan Vannin in Manx), a British crown dependency, lies in the Irish Sea almost equidistant from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The Island came under English control in the 14th century and to the British crown in 1765.
Due to this autonomy and the conservative nature of a primarily rural society, the Isle of Man has had several run-ins with the European Court of Human Rights because it was late to change its laws concerning birching (corporal punishment for juvenile male offenders) and sodomy (consensual sexual relations between adult men).

British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.
UK English is the relic of a defunct colonialist power which attempted to impose British English linguistic superiority on a nation which has a higher number of English speakers.
One of the multiplicity of variants of the four-year-old "Revocation of Independence" satire was dusted off, British funnyman John Cleese's name was appended to the end, and the cycle of forwarding started all over again, only this time with a recognizeable name attached to the piece.
