John L. Webber served in the Devon Constabulary from 1863 until 1891 and for a quarter of a century was the village constable for Widecombe-in-the-Moor on Dartmoor.
The jurisdiction of the county authority was eventually admitted and Mr Collins, the Superintendent of Devon County Constabulary, was appointed Inspector of Weights and Measures for the borough.
Two officers from the Cornwall Constabulary were sent to the Isles of Scilly in 1942 to reinforce the local St Mary's parish police officer during the war years but it wasn't until 1947 that the responsibility for policing the islands fell to the Cornwall Constabulary.
