Description of British Submarines by Alan Burgoyne
Submarine boat ‘No. 1’ was launched on October 3rd, 1901, ‘No. 2’ on February 21st, 1902, ‘No. 3’ on May 9th, ‘No. 4’ on May 23rd and ‘No. 5’ on June 10th of the same year.
Seven persons were on board the submarine, and the vessel repeatedly ran the length of the dock submerged a few feet below the surface of the water.
All went well with the submarine, and it is reported that her open-sea trials, which tool place off the west coast of Walney Island, were successful.

Ataman Hotel - Gelibolu / Gallipoli
But the Dardanelles Strait was 64 kilometres long, had currents reaching 4 knots for the submarines to push against, was narrow and posed difficult navigational hazards, and was carefully guarded with forts and gun-boats, floating and fixed minefields, and nets.
Amongst those British E-class submarines that subsequently entered the Sea of Marmara and sank many Turkish and German naval craft were the E11 commanded by Martin Dunbar-Nasmith and the E14 commanded by E.C. Boyle.
Her exposure to the surface was ill timed, and after a dangerous series of yo-yo ascents and descents beyond her tested depth of 100 feet (30 metres), a Turkish gun-boat, the Sultanhisar, was waiting for them to surface again.

 History of U.S. Submariner's Insignia - DOLPHINS
It was a starboard angle on the bow view of an "O" class submarine, proceeding on the surface, with bow planes rigged for diving, flanked by dolphins in a horizontal position with their heads resting on the upper edge of the bow planes.
The submarine insignia was to be worn at all times by officers and men qualified in submarine duty attached to submarine units or organizations, ashore and afloat, and not to be worn when not attached.
Enlisted submariners were given the option of either a silver bullion embroidered sew-on insignia, or a silver plated [or "sterling" silver], metal pin-on insignia for the dress uniform.

Submarine History 1914-1945: A Timeline of Development
The British discovered that torpedoes were routinely running under their targets; they finally realized that the explosive warhead weighed forty pounds more than the peacetime practice head upon which torpedo depth settings had been based.
Boats of the UA class were 230 feet long, about 1500 tons with a speed of 15.3 knots on the surface, and a range of 12,630 miles at 8 knots.
The British developed an on-board escape system, whereby sailors waiting their turn to go out through a pressure-modulated airlock (and chest-deep in water) would be able to breath through individual oxygen masks, permanently stored in the fore and aft torpedo rooms.

They believed that the submarine was only a plaything, something for the younger officers to sharpen their teeth on, but otherwise diverting time and money from other more useful and dependable branches of the service.
Nevertheless, U.S. submarines contributed to the war effort  performing and carrying out a variety of special operations for which 58 submarine officers and 3 enlisted men would be awarded the Navy Cross for meritorious action beyond the call of duty involving great risk.
These eight submarines of the O-class, however, arrived to late to the war zone.  This division of submarines, with the submarine tender SAVANNAH, had left Newport, Rhode Island, on 2 November 1918, and before reaching the Azores, the Armistice was signed.

The Akula class nuclear submarine is officially deemed Project 971 Shuka B (shuka is an aggressive breed of fresh water pike).
First of her class, the K-480 (named Bars, Russian for panther) was laid down in 1982 at the Komsomol'sk Shipyard on the Amur River (Eastern Russia) under the authority of the Malakhit Design Bureau.
The remaining submarines have been built or are under construction at the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk (Northern Russia near Arkhangel’sk), now the primary shipyard for the Russian Navy.

Submarine: A Guided Tour of a Nuclear Warship, first published in 1993 but recently updated, is the lead book in a seven-volume non-fiction series which examines many of the weapons systems and/or units that appear in Tom Clancy's fiction.
Written with the assistance of defense analyst John D. Gresham, Submarine is an interesting look at one of the most fascinating yet least seen warships in the United States Navy, the Improved Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine.
This book was an excellent introduction to a range of topics: the role of submarines in the Navy, the various types of submarines out there, a little bit about the weapons systems and sonar equipment, and most importantly for me, a glimpse of life aboard a submarine.

 Captain Class Frigate - Welcome
Those that were built were distributed between six classes mainly distinguished by their power units and various armaments, these were Evarts, Buckley, Cannon, Edsall, Rudderow and John C. Butler, but here we are only concerned with the Evarts and Buckley classes as these were the only types used by the British Navy.
Although these vessels were to be produced mainly for anti submarine warfare the US Navy designated them as Destroyer Escorts and in addition to their Anti-Submarine weapons they were fitted with torpedo tubes on the superstructure midships, thus sticking to the Destroyer mentality.
The British on the other hand viewed these ships as unequivocally anti submarine units, so the use of torpedo tubes did not arise, and as they were of a smaller size than a Destroyer they designated them as Frigates.

The film follows one of the British flower-class corvettes (small warships of under 1000 tons), the HMS Compass Rose, which is assigned the perilous task of escorting Royal Navy convoys.
Like many British war films, the characters have a very no-nonsense, stiff-upper-lip approach to the task at hand, but the film doesn't stint on the horrors of war, including unexpected deaths and doomed romances.
Colditz is a mountaintop fortress that had proved to be an escape-proof prison camp during World War I, and was on its way to enjoying the same reputation in World War II until Reid and a small group of Englishmen, as well as Dutch, French and others, make escaping from the camp their main priority.

HMS E15 was an E-class submarine of the Royal Navy, commissioned in 1914.
Early in the morning of April 17, the submarine, having dived too deep and become caught in the vicious current, ran aground some ten miles in near Kepez Point directly under the guns of Fort Dardanus.
Several attempts were made; first, the British submarine B6, with Brodie's brother on board, tried to sink her by torpedo but missed.

At present, Libyan submarines are inept and essentially non-operational, but the Indian and Chinese submarine forces are large with a core group of submarines that are relatively well maintained and operate routinely at sea.
Since the significant impact of submarine warfare was first demonstrated during World War I, the goal of ASW has been to provide a seamless, in-stride denial of adversary submarine influence on political and military objectives throughout an area of interest.
Additionally, adversary submarines may approach the area of operations from other directions if they were deployed before the arrival of the naval forces or if third party submarine forces are committed to the conflict by a government sympathetic to the principal adversary’s goals.
