The pair of large-format stamps featured a lion in an imposings stance; they were issued twice, in 1924, and then in 1925, the stamps of each year being inscribed with the year of issue.
The century of the postage was celebrated in 1940 with a set of six depicting Victoria and George VI side-by-side.
British stamps were used at many of these colonies in their early years, and can be recognized from numbers on the postmarks.

This collection of British Africa issues to 1935 was formed by Dr Edward Mosely of Johannesburg, South Africa, and presented by his daughter, Mrs Kathleen Cunningham, in 1946 in memory of her parents.
The designs of these stamps, which were mainly either that of Hitler’s head or a Swastika, were unacceptable by the Allies for use by the civilian population and required that they be obliterated in some way.
The postage stamps in the Archive are usually taken from the first printing, copies being held by the Chief Inspector of Stamps and the Crown Agents Bureau.

 Edward VIII Postage Stamp Essay
It is the purpose of this paper to examine the events surrounding the demise of the Edward VIII issue, and its connection to the first George VI issue, and to clarify the status of the die-proof essays relating to Edward.
He argued that releasing a stamp bearing a portrait of Edward VIII would not be out of the question due to the fact that the post office continued to issue stamps for many months after the death of a reigning Monarch.
The Government has decided not to issue any King Edward VIII stamps, and for that reason it is necessary to discontinue all work on the engraving of dies and printing plates.

 Britain and the Commonwealth: collect by reign
The first stamp, known as the Penny Black, bears the portrait of a very young Queen Victoria, whose reign began in 1837 and ended 63 years later with her death in 1901.
Stamps printed in this way are called "keytypes" or "keyplates." This printing method provided an economical way for the smallest British colonies to have their own postage stamps.
Edward VII was succeeded by his second son, who reigned as King George V from 1910 to 1936.

 Collecting Stamps
A person qualified to engrave a design as minute as a stamp is at the top of the class, particularly one who can handle the frame, vignette and lettering.
Type-set stamps are usually crudely done, and are frequently State stamps or locals.
This process has been used, for example, in the 1950 multicolored pictorial set of Guatemala, the 1935-7 postage and airmail issues of that country, several Mexican issues in about the same period, the King Edward VIII and King George VI issues of Great Britain, and many of the stamps of Switzerland.

The first postage stamp issue of the Province of Canada featured the beaver on the 3-pence, H.R.H. Albert, the Prince Consort on the 6-pence denomination, and Her Majesty Queen Victoria on the 12-pence.
The portrait of Her Majesty Queen Victoria is reproduced from a contemporary engraving of a full-length painting by Alfred Edward Chalon, R.A. Although this work of art portrays the young Queen in her robes of state, merely the head appears in various British colonial postage stamp designs, including the 12-pence for the Province of Canada.
