As a result of Cooper's articles, in 1911, at the Festival of Empire, cultural and sporting events were held to celebrate the Coronation of King George V. Several countries fielded sportsmen (there were no women) and teams to represent their countries in a limited number of sports.
It was changed to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games for the 1954 Vancouver Games, to recognise the independence of nations that still considered themselves part of the Commonwealth.
In 1966 the Empire was dropped from the name to become the British Commonwealth Games, and in 1978 at Edmonton Canada this became simply the Commonwealth Games.

Bob Pearce of Australia was participating in these 1930 British Empire Games.
One Robert Pearce did in fact represent Australia at the 1930 British Empire Games and not only that he won one of Australia's first Commonwealth Games gold medals in the single sculls.
