British Geological Survey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a publicly-funded body which aims to advance geoscientific knowledge of the United Kingdom landmass and its continental shelf by means of systematic surveying, monitoring and research.
It was founded in 1835, making it the world's oldest national geological survey.
The British Geological Survey has its headquarters in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire and a centre in Edinburgh.

Also held in the archives are specialist historical collections are such as the 9000 photographs from the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Teale collection of photographs taken in East Africa between 1910-1940.
This collection is derived from geological mapping of the UK, an activity that the BGS (in various incarnations) has undertaken since the 1830s.
Mapping was done on the basis of 1:63,360 (one inch to one mile) map areas and part of the fieldwork included the recording of features of significance, in the early days by pen and ink or watercolour sketches and since 1891 by photography.

Main report, Bangladesh GW Studies As Contamination
Extensive arsenic surveys carried out by the Dhaka Community Hospital in association with SOES in 1996 and 1997 were crucial in raising public awareness to the extent of contamination.
A survey being undertaken by Dhaka Community Hospital with UNDP funding is the largest of these surveys and initially aimed to measure arsenic in every well within 200 villages in the worst-affected regions of Bangladesh - this has recently been extended to a further 300 villages.
In the survey area, there were relatively few samples in the range 0.01-0.05 mg/l, though this is not the case in all parts of the country.

Case against British Geological Survey (BGS) underway in London - 1 Apr 03
The case against the British Geological Survey (BGS) is, it was negligent in not testing for arsenic when it conducted a pilot project assessing ground water in central and north-eastern Bangladesh in 1992.
As 2,000 of these patients are from those areas surveyed by BGS in 1991-92, the lawyers for the Bangladesh Government will argue at a preliminary hearing that the British Geological Survey (BGS) does have a case to answer.
In addition, the British Legal Aid System gave the go-ahead for preparing the legal claims of those suffering from arsenic related illness against the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Geological maps routinely record sediments left by floods in the past, such as river 'alluvium' and hence can be an extremely useful predictor of future floods.
As more and more primary geological map data are put into computer databases and integrated with a wide range of supporting geological and environmental data, BGS scientists have been able to use their expertise to better delineate geohazard areas and assess potential risks in the ways described above.

Appropriate technology for low cost Geological Mapping
Gathering geological data and disseminating the data by traditional methods is a slow and expensive process.
Geological Surveys in the developing world, especially those in countries where minerals play and important role in the national economy are increasingly searching for cost-effective and rapid techniques to increase the efficiency of their geological data gathering.
The starting point for the project was a manual written by The British Geological Survey, entitled Remote Sensing and image analysis a practical training manual, this contained information on guidance for the use of the technology available.
