	British half penny coin - Suprari (beta)
		The British decimal half penny (½p) - (pronounced as HAYP-nee, IPA: Interwiki: IPA » ˈheɪpni or ˈheɪpəni) and also written halfpenny or 'hapenny''' - was first issued on 15 February 1971, the day the British currency was decimalised.
		In the same vein, a decimal quarter-penny coin (to be struck in aluminium) was also proposed (which would have allowed the pre-decimal threepence to continue to circulate with a value of 1.25 new pence), but ended up never being produced.
		The 1984 half penny was issued only in mint and proof sets by the Royal Mint, and the coin was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation in December 1984.

		In 1971 the United Kingdom finally converted to decimal currency on February 15th, having made a shaky start in 1848 / 1849 with the issue of florins which were one tenth of a pound.
		It seems strange that a decimal currency should include a half penny or cent, but it was presumably easier, perhaps politically, to keep the pound intact, otherwise we would have needed to have "new pounds" or possibly dollars.
		In 1982, all new decimal coins dropped the word "new" from their stated values, and the halfpenny sirvived this change.

		The "penny" originated as far back as the 8th century when a silver coin was minted (in England) which was one 240th part of a pound weight of silver.
		But a copper coin of that value was introduced in 1672 (devaluation of the currency by then would have made the silver in the coin worth more than the face value).

		I am in possession of a 1861 half dollar of the confederate states of America with one side the seated liberty on it and on the other side the flag with 7 stars and stripes crowned by a hat.
