British half penny coin - Suprari (beta)
The British decimal half penny (½p) - (pronounced as HAYP-nee, IPA: Interwiki: IPA » ˈheɪpni or ˈheɪpəni) and also written halfpenny or 'hapenny''' - was first issued on 15 February 1971, the day the British currency was decimalised.
In the same vein, a decimal quarter-penny coin (to be struck in aluminium) was also proposed (which would have allowed the pre-decimal threepence to continue to circulate with a value of 1.25 new pence), but ended up never being produced.
The 1984 half penny was issued only in mint and proof sets by the Royal Mint, and the coin was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation in December 1984.

British Coins before the Florin, Compared to French Coins of the Ancient Regime
The table at right shows the British coins in common use until the introduction of the two shilling Florin in 1849.
Half and even quarter farthing coins were minted for use in Celyon (with the halves made current in Britain itself in 1842), and third farthings were minted for many years for use in Malta.
The modern British 5p coin, which is the decimal descendant of the shilling, thus may be said to be the last link to Roman coinage, although, as the solidus, it only existed on paper for the many centuries of the silver penny.

 1971 Coin of the Year
In 1971 the United Kingdom finally converted to decimal currency on February 15th, having made a shaky start in 1848 / 1849 with the issue of florins which were one tenth of a pound.
It seems strange that a decimal currency should include a half penny or cent, but it was presumably easier, perhaps politically, to keep the pound intact, otherwise we would have needed to have "new pounds" or possibly dollars.
In 1982, all new decimal coins dropped the word "new" from their stated values, and the halfpenny sirvived this change.

Did You Know? - Coins and Decimalisation
The "penny" originated as far back as the 8th century when a silver coin was minted (in England) which was one 240th part of a pound weight of silver.
But a copper coin of that value was introduced in 1672 (devaluation of the currency by then would have made the silver in the coin worth more than the face value).
New pennies and half penny coins were introduced but the old coins were temporarily assigned new values - the florin became 10 new pence, the shilling became 5 new pence and the old sixpenny coin filled a role as 2.5 new pence for a short while.

  British coinage
The English penny was derived from a small silver coin minted by Charlemagne which was in general circulation in Europe during the middle ages.
The weight of this coin was originally1/240th of a troy pound, a weight known as a pennyweight[?] - around 1.555grams.
Note that the medieval florin, half florin, and quarter florin were gold coins intended to circulate in Europe as well as in England and were valued as much more than the Victorian and later florin and double florin.

In 1983 the nickel-brass £1 coin was introduced, roughly coinciding with the removal from circulation of the £1 note, which occurred in 1984.
The coin was not minted in the new classification and was withdrawn from circulation in 1980.

British pennies have an ancient and honorable history, but this particular design was made for 111 years, from 1860 until Britain changed all her currency in 1971.
It was a little silver coin, and it got littler as the price of silver went up, because the value of a coin was more or less related to the value of the metal it was made of.
Composition of the penny changed from copper to bronze in 1860 (bronze is copper with a bit of tin and zinc mixed in).

The coins weigh 12.00 grams and are 28.40 millimetres in diameter.
As with all coins of this period, the denomination was not written on the coin, which was worth its weight in silver, thus a halfpenny was half the size and weight of a penny.

To avoid confusion the new coin was made unusually thick and had twelve sides, making it easily recognisable during the flouts of the War years, when to protect the nation from airborne attacks no lights could be shown at night.
