Pierce maintained a strong interest in the militia all his life, and in 1805 he was made Brigadier General of the State Militia.
Pierce was a delegate to the 1791 state Constitutional Convention, a member of Governor's Council (1803-1809, 1814) and Sheriff of Hillsborough County (1809-1812, 1818-1827), before becoming Governor.
He was a close friend of Andrew Jackson(President of the United States, 1827-1839), and one of Pierce's own nine children, Franklin, later became President (served 1853-1857).

The Hampshire County Division was formed on February 28, 1941 by the redesignation of Hampshire Area.
In addition to the 214th Independent Infantry Brigade (Home), there were three sub-areas under the command of the division.
On November 25 the division ceased to function and the headquarters was disbanded on December 31.

Grant County was created by an act of the state legislature on February 14, 1866 from parts of Hardy County.
He traveled to present-day Moorefield in nearby Hardy County and staked a claim to 400 acres of land by using a tomahawk to mark slashes on trees outlining the claimed territory.
When the county was formed, the county seat was held temporarily at John May's Mill, near the North Fork of Luney's Creek, while a courthouse was being constructed in Maysville, named for John and Henry May, two brothers who settled there in 1831.
