The British Home Championship (also known as the Home International Championship or just the Home Internationals) was an annual football competition contested between the UK's four national teams, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ireland before 1921-1922), from the 1883-1884 season until the 1983-1984 season.
The Troubles in Northern Ireland had affected the British Home Championship before, with things turning so hostile that Northern Ireland often had to play their 'home' games on the UK mainland in Liverpool or Glasgow.
The entire 1980-1981 Championship was held in May 1981, which conicided with a large amount of civil unrest in Northern Ireland surrounding the Maze Prison hunger strikes.

 British Home Championship Overview
It was the oldest competition of its kind and the one that lasted for the longest time; until discontinued in 1984 it had run for 101 years.
It was contested between the four british football associations and started as a follow up to the annual friendly matches staged between them in the late 1870s and early 1880s.
The winner was decided on points; in case of a tie, the championship was shared, until 1979 when goal difference was introduced as tie braker.

British Football League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Football League is a proposed association football league in the United Kingdom that would incorporate clubs from across the Home Nations.
Each Home Nation has its own national side, and so should have its own league system (although prior to the formation of the then League of Wales in 1992, this wasn't the case).
The formation of a British league is merely a single proposal, and several other suggestions have been made to reduce the divide between club football in the Home Nations.

Home Nations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.virginia.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Home Nations is a term used to refer to the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — collectively but as separate entities, distinct from the United Kingdom as a whole.
Sometimes the term is used to include all the self-governing nations or states of the British Isles (thus including the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey); however, some consider this usage to be incorrect.
The term is often used when referring to sporting events in which each Home Nation competes separately, such as the now defunct British Home Championship in football.

However, the new international tournaments meant that the Championship took on added importance in certain years.
From these points, a league table was constructed and whoever was top at the end of the competition was declared the winner.
If two or more teams were equal on points, that position in the league table was shared (as was the Championship if it occurred between the top teams).

British Home Championship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Home Championship (also known as the Home International Championship) was an annual football competition contested between the UK's four national teams, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (Northern Ireland after 1921-1922), from the 1883-1884 season until the 1983-1984 season.
Ironically, the 'weaker' teams that England and Scotland no longer wanted to play excelled in the final Championship: Northern Ireland won it and Wales finished second.
Scotland played England at Hampden Park on April 15 in the final game and lost 1-0 to a goal by Chelsea's Roy Bentley, dubbed 'the man who robbed Scotland of Rio'.
