  HOVERCRAFT
In the mid-1870s, the British engineer Sir John Isaac Thornycroft built a number of ground effect machine test models based on his idea of using air between the hull of a boat and the water to reduce drag.
Hovercraft service is suspended for several weeks each year while the river is beginning to freeze to minimize damage to the river ice surface.
The hovercraft is perfectly able to operate during the freeze-up period, however, it could potentially break the ice creating hazards for the villagers using their snowmobiles for transportation along the river during the early winter.

Hovercraft should not be confused with sidewalls, which are a cross between a catamaran and a hovercraft, where pressurised air is kept between the twin hulls, elevating the vessel and reducing the drag through the water, but preventing it from travelling on land.
By inserting a cat food tin into a coffee tin, and blowing a jet of air through the gap between the walls of the inner and outer tins, he demonstrated the possibility of a machine that could one day travel on a cushion of air.
On examination of the craft afterwards, it was found that she had been dished in the bow due to excessive speed, damage which was never allowed to be repaired, and which was affectionately referred to as the 'Royal Dent'.

This new hovercraft has been created from a combination of designs supplied under license by GKN Aerospace Services (formally British Hovercraft Corporation) and 37 years of operating experience accumulated by Hoverwork & Hovertravel, our parent company.
Through the addition of on-deck modules, either readily removable or semi-permanent, the design is very well suited to carry up to 160 passengers, a combination of passengers and freight/light vehicles, as a 100% load carrier, engage in SAR operations or long range coastal patrol duties.
There is no significant difference in the performance of the 2 types at an all-up weight of 88,000 Kg.  However, the '150' fully loaded with passengers will perform slightly better than the '200' fully loaded with passengers in light to moderate sea conditions, there being little or no difference in performance in rougher conditions.
