In 1920 came the Leyland 8, a luxury tourer that would soon find its way to the racetrack at Brooklands, being driven by J. Parry-Thomas (who unfortunately would later be killed when making an attempt on the land speed record after the chain drive broke).

Leyland has a long and distinguished history dating from 1896, when James Sumner and the Spurrier family founded the Lancashire Steam Motor Company in the town of Leyland, in North West England.
It is probable that the reason why the name 'Leyland' was maintained within the group name since merging the in 1968, was that Leyland had largest share of revenue within the new motor group.
However the 'Leyland' group name under which cars were made, ended after 15 years of usage, when the motor group was renamed to Austin-Rover in 1983.

The British Leyland Motor Corporation ("BLMC"), was a vehicle manufacturing company formed in Britain in 1968.
This, combined with serious industrial relations problems (principally, the company's relations with hard-line Socialist Trade Unions of the time), and ineffectual management meant that BL became an unmanageable and financially crippled behemoth whose bankruptcy in 1975 was inevitable.
Many of the brands were divested over time and continue to exist to this day, although the British Leyland name came to an end in 1982.
