Leyland is a town in the South Ribble borough of Lancashire, England.
Leyland Trucks now operates as a division of PACCAR from the Leyland Assembly Plant in North West England manufacturing around 14,000 trucks per year of which about a third are sold in the EU.
Historically, Leyland Motors was a major manufacturer of buses used in the United Kingdom and world-wide, being probably most famous for the trend-setting Atlantean rear-engined double decker bus design produced between 1956 and 1986.

Leyland Motors grew from the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, founded in the town of Leyland, North West England by the Sumner and Spurrier families.
In 1920 came the Leyland 8, a luxury tourer that would soon find its way to the racetrack at Brooklands, being driven by J. Parry-Thomas (who unfortunately would later be killed when making an attempt on the land speed record after the chain drive broke).
With the Australian operation reportedly losing some $56 million, British Leyland would dispatch 31 year old David Abell to assume Managing Director responsibility, and given the financial difficulties being faced by the parent company it was obvious to most that he would shut down operation.

Leyland is geographically in an excellent spot, close to the important station of Walton le Dale, and just a while up the road is the Roman fort and baths at Ribchester.
Leyland changed from a farming community to an industrial area which is a bit odd as there are no strong running rivers to power the mills, and no canal system from transportation.
Leyland is a large colourful town, and is a strange mix of its old industrial routes alongside the more traditional and the ultra modern.

The Evening Standard, 1/26/05: MG/Rover described reports that the British government has offered a £100 million “sweetener” to make the deal as “rubbish.” However, it is understood that officials have instructed the British Embassy in Beijing to inform SAIC that they could be offered a deal.
The British government has warned that up to 60,000 jobs might be at risk, if the agreement collapses.
I remember these little symbols of Britishness affixed to the bonnets of MGs and bootlids of Morris Minors when I was a wee sprout in San Francisco.

Now that production of MGs at the British Leyland Plant at Abingdon has finally ceased, it may be timely for me to tell you what I know of this sad event.
The Leyland Motor Corporation had as its Chairman, Sir Henry Spurrier, who had been Chairman of Leyland Motors Ltd. Alec Dick was Managing Director (ex-Managing Director of Standard Triumph Int.), and on the board was one Donald Stokes, lately Sales Director of Leyland.
It was only a matter of time before Stokes had fought his way to the top and, as Sir Donald Stokes, he was Chairman of Leyland Motor Corporation at the time they began their negotiations with British Motor Holdings.
