The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and is one of the world's most significant research libraries, holding over 150 million items (more than any other library in the world).
Prior to this, the national library was part of the British Museum, which provided the bulk of the holdings of the new library, alongside various smaller organisations which were folded in (such as the British National Bibliography).
The British Library is the only one that is entitled to receive a copy of everything within one month of publication; the other five have to wait for up to one year.

The British Museum Reading Room, situated in the centre of the Great Court of the British Museum, used to be the main reading room of the British Library.
This function has now been moved to the new British Library building at St Pancras, London, but the Reading Room remains in its original form.
In the 2001 Japanese anime OVA Read or Die, the Reading Room is used as the secret entrance to the British Library's fictional "Special Operations Division." Alfred Hitchcock used the Reading Room and the dome of the British Museum as a location for the climax of his first sound film Blackmail (1929).

In Library of Congress Classification, the letters of the English alphabet are used (alphabetic notation), minus the letters O and I, which are easily mistaken for the numerals zero and one.

British legal cases covering the reigns of Henry VI to Elizabeth I, charters from the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, and genealogical records from several English counties are other important documents in this collection.
Prepared by British military engineers and forming the collection of William Faden, a major eighteenth century map publisher, these manuscript and printed maps are an important part of the Library's materials on the Revolutionary War period.

The RIBA Trust is delighted to announce that the British Architectural Library has purchased the Codex Stosch, one of the most significant 16th century collections of architectural drawings of the great buildings of ancient Rome, produced by Giovanni Battista da Sangallo (1496-1548), a member of Raphael’s circle.
The British Architectural Library is very grateful to the Earl of Rosse for kindly depositing on loan to the library the original manuscript of Miscelanea Structura Curiosa by the Irish architect Samuel Chearnley (1717 or 1718 - 1749), dating from 1745.
The Library was established in 1834 as the library of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA Library).

 British Library throws out thousands of books and historic newspapers
The library board left the selection of material to be junked to junior staff.
Richard Cheffins, head of the British Library's social policy information service, said the library had abandoned its previous policy due to the expense this entailed.
But this was denied by Ed King, who heads the British Library's Newspaper Library, who said that the titles being considered for disposal included only five Russian Imperial newspaper titles, and were mostly incomplete runs.

The British Jigsaw Puzzle Library has been in existence since 1933 when Lord Craigavon, an addictive solver of puzzles, wished to lend his puzzles to friends and introduced a subscription charge to cover costs.
Elsie felt it was her duty to carry on the library and what finally made up her mind, for some obscure reason, was a baby's shoe in a parcel.
The Library has only had seven owners throughout its sixty-seven years, and the current owners are dedicated to keeping the Library in excellent condition, as all of the previous Jigsaw Puzzle Library owners were.

Following on the runaway success of their exhibition 'The Lie of the Land', the British Library's Map Library has mounted a new exhibition in the foyer to the reading room.
If only the architects of the new British Library had any appreciation of the visual appeal of maps, they might have installed more than two cases, but it is good to see the Map Library continuing to come up with interesting displays in such limited space.

They posted a brief update to their main page, which I think is something that all libraries should be able to do in case of an emergency.
