No class of locomotive or multiple unit numbered over 1000 examples, so the last three digits were used for the individual number between 001 and 999 in that class.
Locomotives are assigned classes 01-98: diesel locomotives 01-69, DC electric locomotives 70-79, AC electric locomotives 80-96, departmental locos (those not in revenue-earning use) 97, and steam locomotives 98.
Coaching stock and individual multiple unit cars are allocated five-digit numbers; since the early 1980s it has been forbidden for them to have the same numbers as locomotives, but before then duplication was possible because they carried a prefix letter, which was considered part of the number.

Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) are given the subsequent classes; 300 to 399 are overhead AC units, while Southern Region 600-volt DC third rail EMUs are between 400 and 499, with other DC electric units between 500 and 599.

British Railways came into existence on 1 January 1948 with the merger of the Big Four, under the control of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC).
Also during this time, yellow warning panels, characteristic of British railways, were added to the front of diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units in order to increase the safety of track workers.
These locomotives were destined to lead short lives, some as little as 5 years against a design life of over 30 years, because of the decision to end the use of steam traction on 11th August 1968.

A large number of different shunter types were purchased by British Rail and its predecessors, many of which were withdrawn prior to the introduction of TOPS.
The 900 series classes were reserved for multiple units in departmental stock, most of which were converted from old passenger units.

Science Fair Projects - SR Multiple Unit Numbering and Classification
The Southern Railway created numbering and classification systems for its large fleet of Electric multiple units that were perpetuated by the Southern Region of British Rail until the early 1980s, when the impact of TOPS was felt.
Unit numbers were allocated in a series commencing from 1001, which followed the set numbers given to semi-fixed formations of hauled coaching stock, 1-1000.
The Southern Region of British Rail perpetuated this method of classification, and the same principles were also adopted for their fleet of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit stock, but these types only used single letter codes.

Locomotive engineers expressed a liking for the design because of the high visibility at night, and the general impression was that it made a "new image" for the North Western.
Locomotives for the train consisted of one BCR C40-8M on the head end, trailing C42-8 8577 (the "Safety and Reliability" slogan unit) and C40-8 8542 (the "Wyoming Centennial" unit), and the second BCR C40-8M operating in remote mode on the rear end.
Units with 1,500 horsepower and EMD 567BC engines are called "GP7Rs" and units with 1,750 horsepower and 567C engines are called "GP9Rs." The 74 GP7Rs and 55 GP9Rs came from CandNW's own 125-unit fleet of 100-, 1500-, and 1600-class GP7s, along with its own 83-unit fleet of 100-, 600-, 700- and 1700-class GP9s.

British Railways came into existence from 1 January 1948, under the control of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC) Independent railways were not taken into BR.
The British Railways Board (BRB) was created in 1962, taking over from the former British Transport Commission (BTC) which, in addition to the railway, was also responsible for the waterways (canals) and road freight transport.
During the 1960s the TOPS system for classifying locomotives and multiple units was introduced, and is the basis of the classification system.

While the entire classification describes the domain of nursing, some of the interventions in the classification are, also, done by other providers and NIC can be used and is being used by other providers to describe their treatments.
The classification was first published in 1992, the second edition in 1996, the third edition as I have said will be published or I guess I haven't said, but it is forthcoming this fall to be published with a copyright of 2000.
In this classification an outcome is defined as a variable concept representing an individual, family or community condition that is measurable along a continuum and responsive to nursing interventions.

 numbering.html
The type Ae 4/7 is an electric locomotive (e) with a maximum speed of 100 km/h (A) and with a total of 7 axles, where 4 are driving axles.
For example the locomotives of the series Ae have the numbers from 10201 to 12000, the Be series the numbers from 12001 to 14 000, the Ce series the numbers 14001 to 15000.
As more and more locomotive types are built with the same basic configuration (today mostly four axles locomotives with a maximum speed over 110km/h) every one would be classified as an Re 4/4 type and separating them from each other becomes increasingly difficult.

As nobody has any knowledge about locomotives, the main emphasis is on their clumsy and amateurish attempts to get the machine moving by virtually trying all possible levers, handles and valves.
We see a number of interesting features, including a swing bridge over the old Lachine Canal (I think) at Montreal and a run up the now disappeared Union Station approaches beside the Rideau Canal in the heart of Ottawa (whose downtown station was misguidedly moved to the suburbs shortly after the film was made).
The locomotive chosen was "The Lion", built in 1838 for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

[IRFCA] Indian Railways FAQ: Locomotives - General Information - I
Some classification codes break the system above: e.g., 'RD' is used as a code indicating the power and the load for diesel railcars, and not 'DR' as one might expect: YRD-1 is a series of MG railcars, NRD-1 similarly an NG series of railcars.
The last few models of steam locomotives used in India had this system of classification too, with one change, which was that the 'power' code was dropped.
The serial number of a particular loco usually follows the classification code on the sides and the front or rear (between the buffers) of the loco.

Salfords is one of the few places in the area where it is possible to get above track level to takes photos (thanks to a conveniently located footbridge), as much of the line is on an embankment or there is heavy bush and tree growth blocking views of the line.
Redhill was an important railway junction during WWII, and there are several well known photographs taken during the evacuation of Dunkirk at the beginning of the war with many trains and troops swarming all over the platforms.
There used to be both a goods yard and locomotive depot at Redhill, but these have now gone the way of many others, and now only has about 3 sidings for stabling the odd loco or multiple unit, but nothing more.
