The net result of these meetings was the formation of the British National Films Company.
When the Methodist Times newspaper began to complain about the negative influence that British and American films shown in Britain were having on family life, their editorial was answered by the London Evening News who suggested that instead of complaining, the Methodist Church should provide a solution.
Having created their movie, British National then had to get it distributed and exhibited, but this proved to be more difficult than making the movie itself.

The bleak situation of the British film industry in the wake of Thatcherite deregulation policies, when production in the UK reached an all-time low of 47 films in 1992 caused a call for a "national cinema", which, in fact, was a call for government support for culturally valuable films (Drexler 1998: 108).
Andrew Higson holds the opinion that most of the films before 1970s are no heritage films because they are less concerned to play out nationalistic concerns and do not display authentic heritage attractions.
One of the central characteristics of the heritage film is "the artful and spectacular projection of an elite, conservative vision of the national past" (Higson 1996: 233).

 Film in Wartime
Throughout the 1930s the British Board of Film Censors had exerted strict moral and political censorship of British films, and this influence was supplemented in wartime by the influence of the Ministry of Information.
By 1944, however, Ealing was aware that the British audiences were tiring of war films, and Ealing had to respond to the new movement for popular social change.
Whereas pre-War documentary films had been invariably tied to sponsors such as the GPO or the Gas Board (which meant that potentially radical subject matter had to be toned down), the war freed him.

Discussion Paper MC02-2, Centre for Mass Communication Research, University of Leicester
The parameters used to determine British films have been extensively debated, although it is widely acknowledged that funding is a major criterion: after all, if a UK-based film using UK personnel is underwritten by a US-based corporation then any profits are inevitably going to go overseas rather than back into the British film industry.
During the 1990s, the British film industry apparently reached a high not seen since the 'Golden Age' of film production in the 1950s and 1960s: "The underlying growth of the film and television markets is strong, consumer spending continues to increase and the commercial environment is better than for many years" (Dyja (ed), BFI, 1996:18).
Nevertheless things are not as negative as they sound, for the British film industry has much to offer.

Leon Gaumont and Charles Pathe had both opened film companies by 1909 and there were many films flooded onto the British market from Europe.
The British Board Of Film Censors was founded in 1912 primarily to keep the foreign imports 'genteel', or rather, to be able to control their numbers on the pretext of unsuitability.
The problem with the British film industry was it did not keep pace with the advances being made abroad and quickly became technically out of date.

In 1951 The Crown Film Unit was wound up, but meanwhile the National Film Finance Corporation set up Group 3, under chairman Michael Balcon (of Ealing comedies fame), with a brief to encourage new British talent.
As he lived down the road in Bourne End the company purchased Beaconsfield Film Studios.
The Crown Film Unit, with many of the staff from the GPO Blackheath Unit, moved in and the government spent a lavish £146,000 on refurbishment and equipment.

FAST-BIE-2 (TRENPP2E) BRITISH SOCIETY AND CULTURE PAPERS
The British are said to lack emotion and their national character is often blamed for the poor success of British films.
Major investments were such big-budget films that had an international cast and crew and mixed British and American themes.
However, this crisis was complemented by a critical prestige for British feature films.

However, all were 'British films' at least in legal terms, and many of them reflected aspects of British culture and history, suggesting a complex relationship between the financial origins of a film and its cultural identity.
Many of the heritage films were produced and marketed as crossover films, drawing on the traditions of both the mainstream studio film and the art film and straddling both multiplex circuits and the specialised art-house sector.
The companies that handled such films were typically the larger independents, the mini-majors or indie-majors, or the in-house 'specialty' or 'classics' labels of the majors themselves.

 Gaslight [1940] @ EOFFTV
Walbrook is the key to the film's success, his performance as the increasingly sinister and unpredictable Mallen being matched only by Wyngard whose portrayal of a woman struggling to cope when her model of the world and her place in it is slowly but surely turned inside out and Dickinson's direction is virtually flawless.
This version of Gaslight has been somewhat eclipsed, unfairly, by George Cukor's 1944 American version starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, thhough in many ways this earlier, cheaper and less star-studded version is actually preferable.
