Conference Report: “The Future for Postgraduate Journals”
Postgraduates’ concerns about plagiarism of their work from e-journals aside, the potential of accessibility to an undergraduate audience would broaden not only the dissemination of ideas in the journals but, through the format itself, raise the profile of postgraduate e-journals as an academic resource in the consciousness of universities.
Posing and answering the question “Why publish?” she sobered a room of aspiring academics and postgraduate editors by reminding them that “the only thing that counts for an academic (research) career is an (RAE-able) publications list” and that “there is no future unless the mode and place of publication is recognisably academic”.
The success of the first “Future for Postgraduate Journals” conference in developing a sense of commonality and community amongst diverse journals shows postgraduates taking matters into their own hands and demonstrating just such leadership and coordination in order to provide forums and resources for the dissemination of contemporary knowledge and research.
