The pound sterling is one of the world's most widely traded currencies, along with the United States dollar, the Japanese yen, the Australian Dollar and the euro.
The pound sterling, established in 1560–61 by Elizabeth I and her advisors, foremost among them Sir Thomas Gresham, brought order to the financial chaos of Tudor England that had been occasioned by the "Great Debasement" of the coinage, which brought on a debilitating inflation during the years 1543–51.
Pound sterling was used as the currency of the British Empire.

Pound Sterling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Prior to decimalisation in 1971, each pound was divided into 240 pence – although it was usually expressed as being divided into 20 shillings, with each shilling equal to 12 pence.
The pound was made fully convertible in 1946 as a condition for receiving a US loan of 3.75 billion US dollars in the aftermath of World War II.
A worse crisis followed in 1976, when it was apparently leaked that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) thought that the pound should be set at 1.50 dollars, and as a result the pound fell to 1.57 dollars, and the government decided it had to borrow 2.3 billion pounds from the IMF.

The coin was introduced in 1983 to replace the Bank of England One Pound note, which ceased to be issued at the end of 1984 and was removed from circulation (though still redeemable at the Bank's offices) on 11 March 1988.
The coin is a continuation of the old Crown coin which continued to be minted after decimalisation with a value of twenty-five pence, although nowhere stating its value.
British coin One Pound strikes (no pun intended) me as a really awkward construction - certainly not something that anybody except possibly a numismatist is going to stumble across by accident.

The actual formula for converting historical pounds to US dollars is pretty complicated, unless you happen to be an economist.
Thus, one British pound in 1800 is the equivalent of $66.39 today.
So, if you have an income of say, 10,000 pounds a year, that would be $663,900 per year today.

 Two Countries
If Britain imported more than it exported, pound notes would be turned in for gold at the Bank of England, and gold would flow out of the country.
For example: the number of Dollars per Pound is the price of a Pound in dollars -- the number of Dollars you have to pay to buy a British Pound.
Devaluing the dollar in terms of the pound raises the price of pounds in terms of dollars -- thus raises the price of British exports to the US -- thus cuts the quantities demanded for imports from Britain.
