The service was provided initially by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Committee in co-operation with British Rail, the National Bus Company and other organisations including the Countryside Commission and West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.
As a result the County Council and other organisations gave grants to British Rail to bring the station up to the standard required for use on occasional basis.

British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the British railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until its privatisation in stages between 1994 and 1997.
British Railways came into existence on 1 January 1948 with the merger of the Big Four, under the control of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC).
The failure of the Modernisation Plan led to a distrust of British Rail's financial planning abilities by the Treasury which was to dog BR for the rest of its existence.

British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the British railway system, between the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until it was privatised in stages between 1994 and 1997.
The British Railways Board was created in the early 1960s, taking over from the former British Transport Commission which, in addition to the railway, was also responsible for the waterways (canals) and road freight transport.
Between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s the size of the British rail network was reduced from around 20,000 miles to 12,000 miles as a result of the "Beeching Axe", the cost-cutting review conducted by BR Chairman Dr Richard Beeching.

 Railroad
Though the rail system was extremely slow at first and prohibitively expensive to build and run, the British were not to be dissuaded in their pursuit of non-animal driven transportation.
Some rails were still made of wood, others iron and the first trains traveled at the pace of 3.5 miles per hour, significantly slower than the horse drawn coach which traveled at a speed of 9-10 miles per hour.
For some of the population the British Rail System offered employment opportunities such as: men moving large amounts of dirt for tracks and tunnels; railway stations had to employ people to serve food and maintain the station; manual signalers were required; and people to actually work on the trains.

InterCity (British Rail) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
InterCity (or, in the earliest days, the hyphenated Inter-City) was introduced by British Rail in 1966 as a brand-name for its long-haul express passenger services (see British Rail brand names for a full history).
The InterCity livery originally consisted of standard British Rail corporate blue with just the brand "InterCity" added in white lettering on each coach (although Inter-City 125 trains treated differently the locomotives at each end of each train, with extensive additional yellow panels - these gave the trains their nicknames of "flying bananas").
After the privatisation of British Rail, InterCity trains were operated by Anglia Railways (later 'One'), Great Western Trains (later First Great Western), Virgin Trains (West Coast and Cross Country franchises), Midland Mainline, Gatwick Express and GNER.

The British Rail Corporate Identity Manual states that the top arrow of the logo on the British Rail flag should always point towards the staff.
(The majority of British Rail flags were presumably made from one piece of fabric rather than right- reading both sides.) Since the convention in flag books is to have the staff on the left, this accounts for the flag being "back to front" but it is not wrong, as Roy Stilling suggests.
As far as I am aware, the British Rail flag was the only instance where it was acceptable to mirror the BR symbol although, from time to time, on roadsigns etc., one sees instances of the BR symbol crudely being reversed where it should not be!

Terry Gourvish's history of British Rail largely is a history of such debates in England between the Treasury, the Department of Transport, and the British Railways Board from 1974 until privatisation.
Part II examines the evolution of the railways under Margaret Thatcher from 1979 to 1989, a time when British Rail's management structure was radically transformed and its ancillary businesses were sold to the private sector, but the core railway business was still not threatened with privatisation.
Part III examines the period from 1990 to 1994, when the government dithered on the question of privatising British Rail, and the British Rail Board further reorganised itself into a structure that it felt would be suitable for privatisation.

There are some short stretches of jointed rail, but these appear to be in places due for replacement as lengths of continuous rail were laid in storage between the running rails.

Since the rail office was closed, we could not convert our BritRail vouchers into rail passes so that we could ride the shuttle, so we took the Underground to a stop near our hotel.

The Privatization of Public Utilities Can Be a Disaster
The disasters that have overtaken electricity privatization in California and rail privatization in Britain have failed to provoke much comment on a basic issue, which is how often people in power are prepared to let themselves become prisoners of ideology.
In the British rail case, the irresponsibility and haste (politically motivated) that went into the program for deregulating a state-controlled railroad industry already in desperate straits is now all but universally acknowledged.
The new British rail companies all chose management teams heavy in financial specialists rather than composed of the people really needed: managers experienced in heavy engineering enterprises, able to grasp and remedy the rail companies' fundamental deficiencies.

As an employee of the rail industury, one question seems to reign supreme: "Were we better off before privatisation?" My overall view is no BUT I do have major reservations about the way the system is being run.
The main benefit of the old BR system is that when we had a problem on the line i.e Manchester to London I would be able to find new route and send you on it, (via sheffield to St Pancreas usually).
This is the major disadvantage at present is the fragmentation of the rail companies and the fact we have 26 TOCs (Train Operating Companies) who seem unable to work together to support the infrastructure.
