The USRA 0-6-0 was the smallest of the USRA standard locomotives USRA Standard classes designed and produced during the brief Government control of the railroads through the United States Railroad Administration USRA during World War I.
The Pennsylvania Railroad rostered over 1,200 0-6-0 types over the years, which were classed as type B on that system.
When diesel shunters began to be introduced, the 0-6-0 type became the most common also; many of the British Railways shunter types were 0-6-0s, including British Rail Class 03 Class 03, the standard 'light' shunter, and British Rail Class 08 Class 08 and British Rail Class 09 Class 09, the standard heavier shunters.

Since their introduction rail freight has primarily moved to fixed-rake bulk freight traffic and intermodal freight operations which reduce or remove the need for shunting.
The Class became sub-class 08/0, when locomotives from the class were given cut-down cabs for use on the Cwm Mawr Line, and became Class 08/9.
Class 08/9 locomotives were modified from the standard class by being given headlights and cut-down cabs in which the overall height was reduced to 11’ 10” (3.61 m), for use on the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway up to Cwm Mawr.

British Rails Class 10800 was a main-line diesel locomotive built by NBL Ltd for British Rail in 1950 and later rebuilt by Brush Traction in 1961.

Long before British Nuclear Fuels created its own rail transport division, Direct Rail Services (we like to call them "the other DRS!") the transport of nuclear flasks around the site was in the care of a British Rail Class 08 diesel shunter.
Calder Hall Nuclear Power Station in May 1981 when a British Rail Class 08 diesel locomotive was shunting a short train comprising nuclear flask wagons and bogie tank wagons (thought to contain acid).The wagon behind the locomotive carries a single flask, the one in front carries two flasks.
DRS also introduced refurbished Class 37 diesel locomotives to their fleet and here 37612 is captured leaving Workington Station for Carlisle.

A new company, Euro Cargo Rail, would be formed to market the new services on routes in northern France, such as Calais to Tourcoing, and Calais to Dunkerque.

Bulleid, aided by his Chief Draftsmen, swiftly began designing another freight locomotive, which was required to conform with a strict set of given parameters: SR weight restrictions, which could severely reduce the effectiveness of large 0-8-0 and 0-10-0 wheel arrangement designs, and the presence of wartime economies, instructing the use of materials sparingly.
This transpired to be a successful class during the war years, which guaranteed its longer than expected existence beyond Nationalisation, in the capacity of both heavy freight and passenger haulage.
The majority of the class were based on the South Central Division - at Guildford and Feltham in particular - but a number of the type were deployed to the South Eastern Division in the early 1950s, long before Type 3 (Class 33) diesels began arriving in force.

The ubiquitous diesel-electric Class 08 or "gronk" 0-6-0 shunter can trace its origins to experimental shunter engines first designed by the LMS and English Electric in the 1930s and built at Derby.
A gradual evolution of various similar types followed, resulting in the proved, robust 08 class of 1953.
This was the most prolific engine on British Rail with 945 in operation during the 1970s.

 Lincolnshire Wolds Railway
It spent its working life at Tarmac at Wirkworth and was restored by Peter Clark at Fulstow before being sold to Great Northern Locomotives Ltd during 1997.
It was built in 1955 and spent most of its working life at Backworth Colliery in Northumberland.
We obtained this engine from Peak Rail and it is presently under restoration.
