Class 101 was the AEC engined cars, and 102 for the Leyland variety.
Three vehicles were the testbed for British Rail’s DMU refurbishment scheme in the ‘70s, which led to hundred’s of vehicles given life extensions.
At present few vehicles have made it to preservation, although with the remaining vehicles still in passenger traffic around Glasgow and Manchester due to be withdrawn in the next six months, that is set to change.

British appetite for high speed was first whetted, probably, by the famous "races" to Scotland which took place in 1888 and 1895.
The 1888 race to Edinburgh was precipitated by the fact that the Great Northern, North Eastern, and North British Railways, forming the East Coast route, decided to admit third-class passengers to the "Flying Scotsman," whereas up till then the principal trains by both routes bad been first and second class only.
As a footnote, L.N.E.R. class A4, "Mallard" attained a speed of 126 miles an hour, on the descent from Stoke Summit in 1938, a world record for a steam locomotive, which is held to this day.........

 The Railcar Association
Class 101 DTC 56342 received extensive press coverage this week over it's eviction from a private residence in Cheshire.
However owner Eddie Knorn's long term own was to return it to working order, and indeed the former Neville Hill classroom spent some time in Derby on it's way to Cheshire getting brake gear installed from a donor vehicle there for scrap as a step towards this.
Particular thanks are due to John Joyce (Llangollen Railway) and Mac Winfield (Dean Forest Railway), and to the NMSI for the use of the Class 114 image.

But in 1938 a rail accident created a massive fire, forcing the Hudson’s Bay Company to abandon the railway and change its operations to truck logging.
In 1942 an army base was established in Chilliwack and a visiting British company of military engineers built Sappers Park at the south end of Chilliwack Lake.
Situated on a bluff at the narrow lake's north end, the park has 146 vehicle/tent sites, the most attractive of which are located beneath some large ponderosa pines at lakeside.

The Met-Cam Class 101 was a relatively new addition to the Lima range, being first introduced in 1997, initially as a two car set but more recently, some three-car sets have been produced.
Originally associated with the Eastern Region, the prototype eventually saw regular service on all regions of British Rail although none were allocated to the Southern Region.

The N&W 101 (as our car was then known) remained a business car until 1977, last assigned to Harold Carter, vice president of N&W's eastern lines.
In 1978 the car was assigned to Coyte Garner of the N&W Research and Tests Laboratory in Roanoke, and in 1979-80 the car was reconfigured as a dynamics test car for testing freight car components under actual service conditions.

The British Rail Class 101 diesel multiple unit was built by Metro-Cammell at Birmingham 1956 to 1959, following construction of a series of prototype units.
This class proved to be the most successful and longest-lived of all BR's First Generation DMUs, with the final five units being withdrawn on 24th December 2003.
The first of these started working the rails in 1954.
