	A Gateway to Brazil
		It is the story of a young British engineer who faced and overcame the apparently insoluble problem of building a railway up the side of a precipice to connect the coffee-growing plateau with the state's principal port.
		At the foot of the fourth incline a deep chasm had to be crossed by means of a viaduct 705 ft. in length, divided into one 45-ft. and ten 66-ft. spans, with the rails, in the centre of the viaduct, 185 ft. above the floor of the valley.
		The breaking strain, of 108 tons when the rope is new and 72 tons when it has been worn, gives a wide margin of safety, as the maximum working load on the rope from all sources is eighteen tons.

		British appetite for high speed was first whetted, probably, by the famous "races" to Scotland which took place in 1888 and 1895.
		The 1888 race to Edinburgh was precipitated by the fact that the Great Northern, North Eastern, and North British Railways, forming the East Coast route, decided to admit third-class passengers to the "Flying Scotsman," whereas up till then the principal trains by both routes bad been first and second class only.
		As a footnote, L.N.E.R. class A4, "Mallard" attained a speed of 126 miles an hour, on the descent from Stoke Summit in 1938, a world record for a steam locomotive, which is held to this day.........

		British Rail had been a single entity (a Crown corporation) that was the sole provider of rail passenger and freight services (with trivial exceptions) in the U.K. Some proponents of Amtrak reform have suggested that the U.K. model is something that could be directly applied to the American environment.
		The fact that Virgin as a rail operator, but still mainly a long haul airline, is looking at the long distance rail market as the prime profit source of growth and earnings in rail transportation is no surprise, since all airlines are well aware of the inherent economies of long distance transportation.
		The applicability of matrix theory to long distance rail passenger travel was demonstrated forcefully in 1989 with the extension of the Palmetto train from its southern terminus at Savannah, Georgia to Jacksonville.

		‘The 108’, as it is known on the Kent and East Sussex, was acquired for the Railway in 1993.

		The Class 124 was a class of initially six car Diesel Multiple Units used and built specifically for the trans-pennine route.
		There was a movement to preserve a set of this class however it was unsuccessful and eventually all were lost.
		The class was a sizable maintenance headache for British Rail for two reasons - firstly they were a totally unique class and secondly they featured wrap-round cab front windows which were expensive to build and replace.

	Patagonian Rail Adventure
		The rail- road is in the process of making arrangements to extend this train from Bahia Blanca to Carmen de Patagonles where it will have a direct connection with the "Crucero Terrestre" that runs west to San Carlos de Bariloche.
		This is a wonderful rail line running down the remote and scenic Maule River Valley and into the rural countryside with thick forests, Rugged and stunning scenery, vineyards, rustic villages, and the feeling of absolute solitude.
		A class 57 2-6-0 is being rebuilt to pull this train and is scheduled to enter service by mid 2005, so we are expecting steam power today.

		Although the 'K's had proved most satisfactory on main lines laid with 70 lb per yard, or heavier rail, there was an urgent need for a modern, powerful locomotive capable or running over secondary lines laid with rails weighing only 53-56 lb per yard.
		It was of handsome appearance, the boiler being partly streamlined after the style of the New Haven Railroad's 'J400' class 4-8-4s.
		Twelve J class locomotives were converted to oil burning and reclassified as Class 'Jb', and the bullet nose streamlining was gradually removed.

		During her stay there, the destroyer "manned the rail" in honor of President Roosevelt, who was then engaged in an informal inspection of the Canal Zone's defenses.
		As one of the 50 flush-deck destroyers transferred to the British under lend lease in return for leases on important base sites in the Western Hemisphere Williams was selected as one of the six units slated for the Royal Canadian Navy.
		Eventually, a British force located and sank Bismarck on 27 May but not before the tragic loss of the battle cruiser HMS Hood on 24 May. The search for the elusive German battlewagon brought some of the British units dangerously close to exhaustion of their fuel supplies.

		Supplied new to the British Electricity Authority (later to become C.E.G.B.) to a design which proved popular for use at large power stations where there was a requirement for locomotives capable of taking over a 1000 ton train from a BR locomotive for the final stage of its journey to the coal tipplers.
