Class 159 units are almost identical to 158s having been converted from 158 to 159 in two batches.
The Class 158 is not based on the Mark 4 bodyshell design, although the latter was developed at roughly the same time.
The current Class 158 fleet consists of eight former FNW units, the ten ATN metro units, 2 former Central Trains units (still in Central Trains livery) and 2 units on hire from Arriva Trains Wales (also both in Central Trains livery).

In the mid to late 1960s British Railways (soon to be rebranded as British Rail) was searching around for ways to increase efficiency, and came across the TOPS system being used by the Canadian National Railways.
No class of locomotive or multiple unit numbered over a thousand examples, so the last three digits were used for the individual number (between 001 and 999) in that class.
Locomotives are assigned classes from 01 to 98, with diesel locomotives assigned classes 01 to 69, DC electric locomotives between 70 and 79, AC electric locomotives 80-96, departmental locos (those not in revenue-earning use) 97, and steam locomotives 98.

The popular British Rail Class 158 "Express Sprinter" (also nicknamed the 'Wessex express' or 'BREL express' after one of the regions it served and its manufacturer) is a diesel multiple unit, built from 1989-92 by BREL at Derby Works.
The Class 158 is based on the Mark 4 bodyshell design, which was developed at roughly the same time.
When ScotRail bought new Class 170 units in 1999, the Class 158 fleet was cascaded onto other routes, such as services to Thurso and Wick.

Prior to the introduction of Class 158 DMUs by British Rail and later Class 170 DMUs by National Express, services were operated by slam-door stock such as the Class 101 DMUs, with longer distance services being operated by diesel locomotives such as Class 37 and Class 47 locomotives hauling a variety of coaching stock.
EWS operate a dedicated pool of 5 Class 90 electric locomotives to haul the Caledonian Sleeper between London Euston and Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central, together with a fleet of Class 67 diesel locomotives to haul the various sleeper portions north of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
When British Rail and National Express ran ScotRail, Class 37 diesel locomotives were used in place of the Class 67 locomotives, an arrangement which continued under First Group through to 2006.
