Class I railroad freight tonnage in 1940 was distributed as follows: Products of agriculture, 9.0 per cent of total carried; animals and products, 1.8 per cent; products of mines, 53.9 per cent; products of forests, 6.1 per cent; manufac- tures and miscellaneous, 27.7 per cent; L.C.L. freight, 1.5 per cent.
In 1941, the Class I railroads of the United States performed the equivalent of carrying a ton of freight 3,577 miles (from Bangor, Maine to San Francisco, California) for every man, woman and child in the United States.
A class rate is a published freight rate applying to any one of many articles in a certain freight classification.

The British Rail Class 121 diesel multiple units were built by Pressed Steel in 1960.
Upon privatisation of Britain's railways, the Class 121 fleet was only operated by one passenger company, namely Silverlink, with several more units in departmental duties with Railtrack.
The units replaced the previous fleet of Class 108 and Class 115 units, and were supplemented with a fleet of Class 117 units cascaded from Thames Valley services.

I seem to be seeing more TW stories by you about rail travel, especially Amtrak, and I think they are helping to inform the travel agent community about issues related to rail travel and what Amtrak is doing.
Rail travel time was reduced in that market from nearly 4 1/2 hours to under 3 hours using existing track.
The first class passengers are shown to their rooms by flashlight, because the engines are being changed and the electrical power is off.

This particular one is a class 220 but there is also a class 221 with the ability to tilt on curves.
I am aware that a British rail magazine recently published reports of a prolonged chaotic situation following a derailment in Basel but in my opinion this is certainly not the norm.
I never met anyone in the last 30 years, British or traveler, with anything good to say about British train service, and that includes travel agencies, who have borne a heavy brunt of complaints from their client travellers.

All these photos of the Voyager Class 221 No. 130 were taken on Saturday 20th July, 2002.
They show the first Voyager Class 221 to travel through Wareham to Weymouth en route from the Midlands (Liverpool and Birmingham).
