GCR Sulzer Type 2 (Class 25) no. D5185   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Along the way she was given the number 25 035 as part of the BR T.O.P.S. classification system and was named "Castell Dinas Bran" (the ruined castle in Wales which overlooks Llangollen).
In March 1987 she was the last member of the class to haul a BR passenger train - covering for a failed locomotive.
Now the oldest surviving member of the class (though plenty of others have reached the relative safety of preservation) she spent a good deal of time at the Northampton and Lamport railway.

Privatisation of British Rail - UK Railways - A Wikia wiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In 1986 what may in retrospect be viewed as the harbinger of private rail operation occurred when the quarry company Foster Yeoman bought a small number of extremely powerful 3600 hp locomotives from General Motors' Electromotive Division (GM-EMD), designated British Rail Class 59, to operate mineral trains from their quarry in Wiltshire.
Foster Yeoman's class 59s proved extremely reliable, and it was not long before quarry company ARC and privatised power generator National Power also bought small numbers of Class 59s to haul their own trains.
British Rail was to be broken up into over 100 separate companies, with all relationships between the successor companies controlled by legal contracts and supervised by the Office of the Rail Regulator and, in the case of the passenger railway, the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising (OPRAF).

British Rail Class 25 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Class 24 locomotives were the precursor of the class 25 design but after the delivery of their first few units it became apparent that the speed ceiling of 75 mph was unduly restrictive and the provision of a bit more power would be advantageous.
At the end of 1985 twelve of the remaining class 25/3 locomotives were designated as 25/9, the intention being that they would operate on traffic won for the Industrial Minerals Division of Railfreight that included salt for road gritting from the ICI mine at Winsford.
The locos were selected from the available pool of Class 25 locomotives in March 1985 with the expectation of three more years of service before 10,000 running hours since last Works attention would be reached and their maintenance being concentrated on Carlisle Kingmoor depot.

Class 25 Passenger Performance and Timings
You only have to think of the difference between a train forcing it way through heavy rain and high winds (wheel slip and wind resistance) and the same working on a dry, windless day to appreciate why this is useful to record for comparative purposes.
At the speeds class 25 locos worked trains there could be several seconds difference between the front and rear coach passing a timing point and just like with the weather I didn't appreciate that was worth recording until it was too late!
Class 25 locos tended to work on Mark 1 coaching stock which weighed between 30 and 40 tons and I would add up the weights quoted on each coach (or look them up in the Platform 5 combine).

The main compromise is in the area of track gauge where a 0.5mm overscale gauge has been accepted as the price of an easy to use scale ratio and an off the shelf track product (being standard 0 gauge track).
That is a small compromise compared to the errors widely accepted in other parts of the hobby like British 00, US 0 scale and G scale.
