 British Rail Class 253 - Biocrawler
Class 253 and Class 254 were the classifications allocated to the production High Speed Train units.
The former class was used for Western Region sets, operating out of London Paddington, and the latter for Eastern Region sets, operating out of London King's Cross, since these regions used different formations - the Western Region [WR] used 2+7 sets, whilst the ER preferred 2+8 sets with a second buffet car.
In 2000, Class 255 was allocated for the reformation of certain HST power cars and trailers into semi-fixed formation trains, to be known as Virgin Challenger units, for use by Virgin Trains after the introduction of their new 'Voyager' trains (Classes 220 and 221).

As a result, the power cars were designated Class 41 and numbered 41001/41002, while the carriages were given numbers in the new Mark 3 carriage number series.
It was allocated Class 252, and the whole formation was renumbered into a new carriage number series for HST and Advanced Passenger Train vehicles (4xxxx).

 Class 252 Prototype High Speed Train
The development of the HST's was meant purely as a stopgap between conventional trains of the day, and the envisaged mass introduction of the ill-fated APT fleet on a newly electrified infrastructure.
Livery was light grey with a rail blue stripe following the window width the full length of the unit.
With the introduction of the production sets the Class 252 was withdrawn, the power cars going to the Research Centre at Derby, and much of the passenger stock was absorbed into the Class 253/254 fleet.

The British Rail Class 150 "Sprinter diesel multiple units (DMUs) were built by BREL from 1984-87.
At the beginning of the 1980s, British Rail (BR) had a large fleet of ageing "Heritage" DMUs built to many different designs in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
In the event, the two Class 150 units proved to be the most reliable, and as a result, an order for 50 two-car units was placed with BREL.
