Railroad   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-21)
Though the rail system was extremely slow at first and prohibitively expensive to build and run, the British were not to be dissuaded in their pursuit of non-animal driven transportation.
Some rails were still made of wood, others iron and the first trains traveled at the pace of 3.5 miles per hour, significantly slower than the horse drawn coach which traveled at a speed of 9-10 miles per hour.
For some of the population the British Rail System offered employment opportunities such as: men moving large amounts of dirt for tracks and tunnels; railway stations had to employ people to serve food and maintain the station; manual signalers were required; and people to actually work on the trains.

British Rail Class 53 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British Rail assigned Class 53 to the single Brush Traction-built prototype locomotive Falcon.
Returning to British Railways in 1963, Falcon spent six months working out of Sheffield on both passenger and freight diagrams, after which its testing was completed.
In 1970, British Rail approached Brush Traction with a proposal to buy the (by now practically worthless) locomotive for its scrap value, which was accepted by the builder; the loco underwent a rebuild at BREL Swindon, emerging in corporate Rail Blue with full yellow ends and bearing the new number D1200.

Specifically, the value of rail services is defined as the change in highway user, maintenance, and safety costs that would result if rail traffic is shifted to trucks.
Rail movements in the I-5 corridor from Vancouver, WA to the British Columbia border include many origins and destinations, commodities, and railroads.
An initial estimate of the average tons per truck is made by dividing the net tons in the rail car by the ratio of the cubic capacity of the rail car to the cubic capacity of the trailer.

In contrast to BC Rail's "high iron," one is hard-pressed to see any iron here at all, with tall grass growing between the ties and shrouding the rails.

The main compromise is in the area of track gauge where a 0.5mm overscale gauge has been accepted as the price of an easy to use scale ratio and an off the shelf track product (being standard 0 gauge track).
That is a small compromise compared to the errors widely accepted in other parts of the hobby like British 00, US 0 scale and G scale.
It can even be argued, maybe a little tenuously, that the 0.5 mm error is within the tolerances of prototype track widening on sharp curves in the steam era of long fixed wheelbases.

The Class 309 EMU website   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-21)
The Class 309s, known at the time as Class AM9 (AC Multiple unit type 9) were built in 1962-63 for the newly-electrified ex-Great Eastern Railway services from London Liverpool Street to Clacton-on-Sea and Walton in Essex.
Later in the 1960s the maroon livery was replaced by the British Rail standard blue and grey, and the wrap-round windows were replaced by flat glass - stone-throwers had become a problem and spares of the special panes were expensive.
They retained their 100 mph speed limit as built, and as such, until the new Class 175s arrived were NWT and First North Western's only trains capable of this speed.
