The Mark 3's bodyshell design proved to be highly adaptable for use in BR's multiple unit stock of the 1980s - EMU Classes Class 317 - 322, and DMU Classes 150 - 156 all use a Mark 3 derived bodyshell.

Rail wear occurs mainly on curves and hardly at all on the straight but, because of welding problems, a solution must be based on increased hardness through refinement of the pearlite structure and not by increasing the alloy content.
The rail crash at Bushey, England in February 1980 is attributed to failure of an alumino-thermic ('Thermit') weld due to lack of fusion with the rail.
