Class 40's became the preferred locos for use with the Royal Train from the late 1960's until 1977, when the train was replaced with an air conditioned set requiring electric train heating.
In front of the loco are representatives of British Rail Intercity and the NRM, with the driver and secondman from the final stage of the railtour.
Thankfully, the Class 40 preservation story was well underway before the end of their main line career.

British Railways' (BR) Type 4 "Warship" class diesel-hydraulic locomotives were introduced in 1958.
The Western Region of British Railways had decided upon hydraulic transmission with lightweight alloy construction for its new diesel locomotives to replace "King" and "Castle" class steam locomotives.
D800 was named Sir Brian Robertson after the Chairman of the British Transport Commission at the time; Robertson was reportedly very concerned that the BTC should not be seen to stifle innovation at Regional levels within BR and this policy was very likely a major boost to the WR's aspirations for a full diesel-hydraulic fleet.

Class action legislation requires the court to certify a proceeding as a class proceeding if certain statutory requirements are met.

Green TOPS - The Definitive List?
Class 08 withdrawals proper had begun in 1972 with a few early members, the vast majority of the class survived long enough to be allocated TOPS numbers but a few did bite the dust before actually receiving one.
Not many Class 24s lasted long enough to run in green after renumbering, most probably due to the fact that they were falling due for overhaul in the early days of Rail Blue and most passed through Derby in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.
A similar situation to the Class 20 existed with the 47s, they were still under construction when Rail Blue was introduced and nos.1953-61 (not numerically the last but the last to be constructed) entered service in that colour scheme, never appearing in green.
