This is one of 30 Class 375/6 units built for Connex South Eastern, primarily to replace ageing 4Cep units.
The British Rail Class 375 Electrostar electric multiple unit train was built by Bombardier Transportation (previously ADtranz) at their Derby Works, from 1999 to 2005.
The Electrostar family, which also includes Classes 357, 376 and 377, is the most numerous type of EMU introduced since the privatisation of British Rail.

The British Rail Class 170 "Turbostar" is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) built by Bombardier Transportation (previously ADtranz) at their Derby Litchurch Lane Works.
The Class 171 "Turbostar" operated by Southern, is identical to the Class 170, except for the replacement of the BSI coupler with a Dellner coupler.
Class 170 units are currently being replaced by Class 350 "Desiro" units on Birmingham-Liverpool services.

The British Rail Class 86 is the standard electric locomotive built during the 1960s, developed as a result of testing with the earlier Classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85.
In the mid-1990s, British Rail was privatised, and the Class 86 fleet was divided among several operators.
However, the class does still have a future with the company, and in the long-term, Freightliner plans to retain a core fleet of 14 locomotives in service until at least 2009, ensuring the class is in service well over 40 years after first being introduced.

From 2000 onwards, new trains in the form of Class 460 units were introduced to replace the old stock.
