 British Rail Class 85 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Rail Class 85 is an electric locomotive built during the early 1960s, as part of BR's policy to develop a standard electric locomotive.
Five protype classes (81-85) were built and evaluated, which eventually led to the development of the Class 86 locomotive.
The class were used to haul trains on the then newly electrified West Coast Main Line, from Birmingham, to Crewe, Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool and later Preston.

The King class were the GWR’s most powerful of locomotives designed by Charles Collett who had also designed the ‘Castle’ class which were more powerful than the LNER ‘Flying Scotsman’.
One of the principle reasons for the development of the ‘King’ class was due to the Southern railway developing its ‘King Lord Nelson’ class which were powerful machines that gave fierce competition for the ‘Castles’ locomotives.
The first of the King class was King George V and was allocated the number 6000 entering service on 29th June 1927.

Though the rail system was extremely slow at first and prohibitively expensive to build and run, the British were not to be dissuaded in their pursuit of non-animal driven transportation.
Some rails were still made of wood, others iron and the first trains traveled at the pace of 3.5 miles per hour, significantly slower than the horse drawn coach which traveled at a speed of 9-10 miles per hour.
For some of the population the British Rail System offered employment opportunities such as: men moving large amounts of dirt for tracks and tunnels; railway stations had to employ people to serve food and maintain the station; manual signalers were required; and people to actually work on the trains.

While not being "good" photo's, they are good photo's of British Railways at work, taken at a moments notice when something good appeared.
I am now adding class details and my experiences of the loco as well as stories to the photo's..
I also in later days 1977/83 worked as a guard for BR on the Weymouth/Waterloo trains, which by then were hauled Weymouth/Bournemouth by Class 33 locos and Bournemouth/Waterloo by REP electric units.

The Class 90s were primarily built to replace the ageing fleets of Classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 dating from the early-1960s, which were prone to fire damage.
In the early-1990s, with the sectorisation of British Rail, twenty-six locomotives were dedicated for freight traffic reclassified as Class 90/1 and were renumbered into the range 90125-150 (with the addition of 100 to the original number).
Upon the privatisation of British Rail in 1996, the Class 90 fleet was divided between several operators.

Mileage of all track increased from 115,647 miles in 1880 to 199,875 miles in 1890; to 258,784 miles in 1900; to 351,767 miles in 1910; to 406,579 miles in 1920, to 429,883 miles in 1930, and declined to 405,975 miles at the beginning of 1941.

The standard telescopic sight for the British military varies with the role (standard military snipers use a Schmidt and Bender 6x42 scope, while counterterrorist snipers and special operations troops often use a Hensoldt 2.5-10x scope).
A rail under the foreguard will accept a bipod, sling, foregrip, flashlight, or laser-type sight, and though the sight mount is not a Picatinny rail, virtually any sort of Western sight equipment may be mounted, whether of military or civilian origin.
Notes: The PH-85 was one of the candidates to become the new British sniper rifle in the 1990s; eventually, it came down to the PH-85 and the Accuracy International PM, and the PM won.

The announcement by EWS in September 2000 that all surviving members of the class w ould be moved south (in exchange for newer Class 66s) to be allocated to Eastleigh, Hither Green (and Acton) finally qualifies this class for inclusion on Southern E Group pages.
The Class 58 design results from a 1977 requirement for a low cost easily maintainable heavy freight Co-Co locomotive with export potential, the introduction of the roughly contemporary Class 56 having been what could tactfully be described as grim.
To meet the specification the traditional British diesel locomotive design practice of a load bearing superstructure was abandoned in favour of a load bearing underframe.

The oldest series, Class 150/1, have no corridor connections in the cab ends, and hand-operated crew doors, whereas the later 150/2 series have corridor connections and powered doors for the crew.
Metro-Cammell's version, the Class 151, was delayed into service for various reasons, with the result that rather than the intended comparative testing, 50 two-car Class 150s were ordered, and 37 of these were ready to take over all workings based at Derby Etches Park depot on 20 January 1986.

Time was running out for this Class of ten locomotives, being considered surplus to requirements.
