		British Rail produced a variety of Railbuses as a means both of building new rolling stock cheaply, and to provide services on lightly-used lines economically.
		Railbuses are a very lightweight type of Diesel multiple unit Railcar designed for use specifically on little-used railway lines, and as the name suggests share many aspects of their construction with a bus, usually having a bus, or modified bus body, and having four wheels on a fixed base, instead of on bogies.
		British Rail returned to the idea of railbuses from the mid-1970s, and a prototype four wheel vehicle was developed jointly by British Leyland and the British Rail Research Division.

		Pacer is the operational name of the British class 140, 141, 142, 143 and 144 railbuses, built between 1984 and 1987.
		The original two-car prototype class 140 was built in 1984 at the British Rail Engineering (BREL) Derby works using a BREL underframe and a Leyland Motors bus body.
		The Pacer railbuses are still in use today and are considered successful by the railway companies.

		That year in a parliamentary debate it was suggested that 'railbuses' should be trialed on UK branch lines in rural districts.
		Unless stations were reasonably near the towns which they served and the timetable at least as good as the 'bus though, the railbuses would not be expected to be able to revive a poorly patronised branch line.

		The British Rail Class 210 was a type of DEMU built in the late 1970s.
		The class was intended to be a modern DEMU to replace the ageing types in use on the Southern region of British Railways however the prototypes built did not manage to secure production for the class and they were withdrawn in the 1980s.
		210001 and 210002 operated in various parts of the country on trial (as did the prototype railbuses, both the single cars and the class 140 set) - in the end they were judged too complex, and their remit was filled by the class 150 family of Sprinter units.
