The Telecom Tower's impressive height (it remained the tallest building in London until the NatWest Tower in 1981) ensured that it could beam calls over the Chiltern hills that form the north rim of the London basin.

B.T Tower is a telecoms tower and does not have floors all the way up it, they are only at the top and the bottom, it simply appears to have floors because of the cladding around the long neck of the building.
The issues are supposedly different although London Bridge Tower has in my opinion a lot less of an impact than 110 Bishopsgate the heritage lobby have sufficient power to complain about the effect it will have on the skyline.
Well in modern terms of 500 feet plus it would be Tower 42 (formerly the Natwest Tower) however the first 'skyscraper' title goes to the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool which was completed in 1911 and for many years the tallest building in Europe.

In 1965, the Post Office Tower was operationally opened as a telecommunications tower in London, England, for TV and radio broadcasting and to carry all of the microwave traffic into and out of the city.
The Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, made an inaugural telephone call to the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, later unveiled a plaque near the foot of the Tower and then rode in a lift to the restaurant floor for a view of London 540 feet below.
Now operated by British Telecom instead of the Post Office, the building is renamed the BT Tower.
