An almost equally radical break from Anglo-Saxon architecture came with the Norman Conquest of 1066 and it is only from this time that British architecture can be studied in terms of a succession of major, surviving, dated buildings rather than from haphazard and often fragmentary remains.
The terms “Norman” and “Romanesque” are often used interchangeably as far as British architecture is concerned, but strictly speaking the Norman style was one of several regional variations of Romanesque architecture (which is characterized most obviously by thick walls and round-headed arches).

The subcontinent was now firmly part of Britain’s colonial responsibilities, and one aspect of the structural changes wrought by the British was a change in the education system, and increased intellectual contact between the two countries.
