  British Birds
British birds number about 30,000 pairs and are fairly sedentary, but Northern European birds sometimes move long distances.
These birds have an amazing laughing call and are known in parts of Britain as the 'yaffle' after this call.
The young birds have the yellow flash in the wing but they may, especially females, be very dull and sparrow-like otherwise.

In general there is one report for each bird or group of birds in each county in which it appears and for each year the bird or birds return.
So a bird considered to be the same individual which is recorded in two counties in one year, and again in one of the same counties the following year, will appear 3 times in total.
The same bird or birds occurring in several counties will usually be listed once for each county in each year, with cross-references where appropriate.

Proact is a growing coalition of birders worldwide which mounts a rapid-response campaign when birds and their habitats are threatened.
The website was initially set up in 2000, to mobilise opposition to Italian MEP Michl Ebner's attempt to circumvent the EU Birds Directive by allowing individual nations the right to determine the duration of the hunting season for migratory birds in their own country.
By the end of its month in the 'bird camp', the Proact team had confiscated 10,000 bow traps and smaller numbers of spring traps and mist nets.

Also there are pictures of 'uncommon' visitor birds at the back and a lovely general introduction of habitats at the front of the book.

The RSPB Handbook of British Birds is an excellent all-round bird book with many topics not discussed in ordinary identification field guides.
The main purpose of the book is to give you a better understanding of the birds in the book with sections on habits, movements and migrations and conservation which gives you an idea of what is causing decline and what can be done to prevent it.
So, for example, you are not only told how to differentiate between a male and female Grey Partridge but also that they have declined by 84% in the last 25 years and that this is linked to a reduction in suitable nesting cover on farmland and insecticide use.
